I like the dead period as it is. Moving the dead period hurts fall sports.

I think Spring Break, week in December, Fall Break should be mandatory off weeks.

That's 5 weeks off.

Spring break is right in middle of spring sports

Not every team can sched an open week for fall break

Basketball is in full go in Dec

Make summer like it used to be. Kids at home doing part time jobs, fishing, camping, etc.

Exactly. All of these happen right in the middle of seasons. From a coach's perspective these breaks are nightmares for practice attendance and focus.

Expand the dead period to the entire month of June. Only top two teams from a district make the playoffs to reduce the number of playoff games.

Let me start by saying I am all for a longer dead period, but here's an argument against it:

Some kids in the district where I live don't camp or fish in the summer. If there is no football or basketball they are home in a rough neighborhood with no supervision. Football can give kids a place to go in the summer for a couple hours, then the means to get to a teammate's house after practice and a safer place to be.

Summer break is great for teachers and most kids. But it can also be the worst thing for the kids that need someone watching over them.

True, but dont punish kids who can do stuff and dont live in a bad neighborhood.

I'm all for another week of dead period. It's not just a week for the student athletes, but coaches and parents as well.

As a football coach, I hate June. Its like a tease because you are so close to the season but you are still missing your whole team for one reason or another. I'd like to see that extra week come out of June. Since there is not a real "season" for June, kids tend to try to do as much as they can. We have had athletes try to play travel baseball, practice HS basketball and strength train with us in football all at the same time; it about killed them.

Instead of competing sports and coaches trying to split a kid in half and have them at every practice (because there are no real games), give an extra week out of this month to go do (insert what floats your boat here) and come back the second week of July ready for football.

And just one more thought: I understand that having set dates for dead period makes scheduling much easier, but I'd like dead period to be 3 full weekends and 2 full weeks each year. And if we are adding a week, then its 4 full weekends and 3 full weeks each year. I also like that it completely surrounds July 4th, and that should never change.

Dead period also deals with middle school kids who play summer baseball and do like to be at home since they just got out of school.

Give society a break, it’s already so fast paced it’s not funny.

Plus it’s not like the state is churning out pro athletes at a high rate.

But the kids hate the dead period. At least the ones I know.

True, but dont punish kids who can do stuff and dont live in a bad neighborhood.

But punish the kids that don’t want to? Why not make the dead period optional? Maybe have a dead period during the winter also and allow schools to choose when to schedule a dead period.

Just give everyone June... NO SCHOOL ACTIVITIES, at all.

Section 3 of Bylaw 24, the Dead Period was developed following a nearly year long task force review in the middle-1990s to address a growing issue where year-round athletics was eroding family opportunities for a break from participation, and outside entities were beginning to sponsor a growing amount of school based summer competition. In addition, over the years, many sometimes overzealous coaches required their players to play scores of games throughout the summer, in addition to a year-round workout regimen. While this may seem to be in the best interest of developing sports talent, such is not the purpose of high school athletics. High school sports are to supplement classroom learning and allow for in-season competitive opportunities, not a year-round Olympic or professional development period. Families were complaining that they could not plan vacations and family outings because of coach’s requirements and athletes were complaining of burn out. In addition, schools were increasingly concerned with liability issues related to the summer. In a survey conducted by the KHSAA, 80% of superintendents, principals and athletic directors who returned the survey indicated they supported a “dead period” in the summer. Initial responses were overwhelmingly in support of a four (4) week dead period. The primary intent of the regulation is to eliminate, for an approximately two (2) week period, the leverage a coach has over his/her high school athletes.

But the kids hate the dead period. At least the ones I know.

They can still do things just not at the school or with their team.

Some of you realize that even the FBS and FCS schools have sent their young men home for 3-4 weeks, correct?!

As in. Get the hell away from here.

Your NAIA, D2 and D3 schools still have most of their players off campus all summer as well until fall camp.

Somewhere along the lines, like a lot of things, high school has gotten things just a tad bit twisted.

A race arms of trying to keep up w the Jones’ (heavy emphasis on the word “try”). Monkey see. Monkey do. Well they are doing it, so I better also or it won’t look good.

Instituting the dead period is the best rule that the KHSAA has adopted in my opinion. I would not mind adding another week to it, but that is not a deal-breaker for me.

When again did "dead periods" begin? Late '90s?
