Babies in Kentucky born drug-addicted

Featured Replies

Herald Leader @heraldleader

The number of Kentucky babies born dependent on drugs has climbed from 46 in 2001 to 1,115 in 2016.

What an awful, terrible statistic.

How can we fix this?

Starts with Doctors over prescribing pain pills.

And somehow I’m sure the Big Pharmaceutical Company’s are to blame for most of it.

Money, not lives matter to them.

Nope, it starts with people over using pain pills. This is personal responsibility plain and simple.

I guess my question is this - what makes people so much different than they were less than a generation ago that this statistic would increase by well over 2,000%?

You can’t overuse if the DRs aren’t prescribing them over and over.

How are they going to get them if the DRs aren’t giving them out?

Parents not taking kids to church and parents not being in church.

No discipline by parents.

Too much idle time.

It's more acceptable to a wider range of people recreationally and the huge increase in availability of prescription drugs and the spread of non-pharmaceuticals has also helped in the spread.

Astonishing numbers yet no one addresses it. I’ll love to throw this out to the gals I work with who’s greatest concern for their children is worried about them getting shot in a school.

The numbers are going to continue to climb. Children learn what they live. If it’s no big deal to be high while raising your kids, your kids will see that it’s no big deal to get high. So with more “impaired judgement” people living among us, there will be more pregnancies by drug addicted women.

I disagree. I think @archangel is correct about doctors over-prescribing pain pills. I know of quite a number of families where people that had no problem before pain pill prescriptions, then they became addicts. We have to consider all of the problem if we're going to solve the problem.

Not all are addicted to prescription medication.

True. But even some of them got their start there.

Absolutely! Drugs in schools and teen texting while driving are much more prevalent and a much more likely scenario to be concerned about.

I'll have to disagree. With nearly everyone of the parents I eventually deal with that have had babies born addicted to meth or heroin, they have never had a Rx pain pill prescribed to them. The number I deal with in my small county is staggering.
