Fulton City being investigated by KHSAA?

Featured Replies

Nothing was brought up in this case until the playoffs had started and that was after the semi's. The player in question was the key to Highlands winning since he did most of the scoring. He did not play in the state finals.

Actually, if I remember correctly, the case started early in the year and he was ruled ineligible early on. He sat out one game, then got an injunction to play pending appeal. So he played the remainder of the season and the first 4 playoff games before the ruling that barred him from participating in the final game.

That is why they forfeited all but 2 games (the only two he didn't play in).

Absolutely correct, I didn't want to go into full details. The family went to court and had the KHSAA over ruled by a county judge. The KHSAA waited around w/out doing anything until the state finals.

Just heard its official from some Fulton City folks on another forum, they are going to have to forfeit all their games. Mighty quick ruling from the KHSAA folks.

Not true. If memory serves, the KHSAA filed an appeal that wasn't ruled on until just before the state finals.

I received an email from the lady director of KHSAA at that time when I protested the timing. She stated that they (KHSAA) had no control when the court of appeals ruled (the Monday following the semi-finals game). Yet this allowed the player to play until Highlands was assured the finals, and eliminate the possibility of having to forfeit championship game and trophy later by setting him for last game! All season it was pending and ruled on 48 hours after the semi victory. Timing sure seemed suspicious, and is why some Bell. Co. folks tried to get the courts to intervene to not allow Highlands to advance. The ineligible player scored all points against Bell in Highland comeback win on Log Mountain. In this case the coaches, adminstration, etc. knew all season that he was playing under an injuction of court pending KHSAA appeal. Why have an organization as the KHSAA if every time they rule, someone goes to court to overturn their ruling! Ultimately they won their (KHSAA) appeal, but the finals were secured, and all Ft. Thomas had to do was win one game to take home another championship.

So if you are a Fulton official do you just sit back and take your medicine or go see the local judge and get him to take a look at the case and possibly get you back on the field and let the cloud ride over your head into the playoffs?

Wasnt there also a court injunction in basketball recently? maybe a exchange student in one of the Laurel schools or somthing? My memory is failing but I think there was somthing like that also

Coach Lohaus in the article admits that it was the administration's fault for not turning in the proper paperwork on the two players.

I think this part signifies that Fulton City's administration is at fault for the error, and judging by past precedent, the KHSAA's ruling in this case shouldn't be overruled (see Danville's case).

It is not an issue of whether the kid was eligible or not, it is an issue of procedures not being followed and until the paperwork was filed, the kid(s) was not eligible. It is a black and white issue with no grey area if the facts as stated above are true.

I know a few years back there was a case involving a basketball player from Marshall County that transferred to Graves County right before school started...if my fading memory is correct I believe his last name was McGregor or something like that...and it went back and forth in the courts and KHSAA and Marshall County even forfeited one of its games against Graves County that year because the kid was in uniform and playing. I think in the end the KHSAA ruled that the kid was finally eligible to play, but once again I could be wrong...but that is the only case locally that I know of.

Here is a copy of the article that ran in todays paper

Fulton City’s football team, in the midst of its best season in nearly three decades, may find out today if it has to forfeit several wins and perhaps miss the Class A playoffs.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association confirmed Wednesday it has a pending eligibility case involving two Fulton City players, one which may be resolved in the next couple of days. The regular season ends Friday, when the Bulldogs meet archrival Fulton County.

“We need to get everything decided as soon as we can, but we’re still in the process of trying to get all of the information,” KHSAA assistant commissioner Julian Tackett said. “At this point, we’re not completely sure that there has been a violation, and if there is, we will make a ruling. We don’t need to let this go on past this week, with the playoffs about to start.”

Fulton City coach Wayne Lohaus said the school is guilty of “an administrative oversight” in not turning in KHSAA transfer forms on the two students, both of whom are transfer students — one from Fulton County and the other from Union City (Tenn.).

“It’s our fault for not filing the paperwork,” Lohaus said. “And we have to wait and see what the KHSAA decides. How strong the penalties are ... that’s the KHSAA’s call.”

Forfeitures of Fulton City’s seven wins are possible because it is likely that both players saw action in each of those games. Lohaus said one of the players is a starter on defense while the other sees action primarily on special teams.

Lohaus said he found out about the eligibility questions last Thursday, when he attended the KHSAA Delegate Assembly in Lexington.

“I was in a meeting and was asking (assistant commissioner) Roland Williams about a Title IX matter, and he told me they had a phone call about this,” Lohaus said. “It was the first I had heard about it. My knees went a little weak.”

Lohaus said both players were held out of last week’s contest with Mayfield, which beat the Bulldogs 22-8, and will not play until the matter is resolved. It is possible they will also miss the Fulton County game.

Until the eligibility case came up, it appeared Fulton City (7-1) had earned the right to host a playoff game for the first time since 1968. Depending on the severity of the potential penalties, the Bulldogs could miss the postseason altogether.

If Fulton City is forced to forfeit all seven wins, it will miss the playoffs regardless of the outcome of the Fulton County game. In that case, Murray would claim the district’s No. 2 seed and most likely host Fulton County in the first round of the playoffs, with Mayfield hosting Ballard Memorial.

I heard from friend fan down in Fulton that unofficial word is that Fulton has is gotten legal counsel to look into their options.

I figured it would happen. I think it would be a bad move on their part to pursue it, since we are only talking about a couple of playoff games and a very unlikely win against Mayfield in the playoffs. Just not worth tainting your image for a win or two IMO.

TV 6 said this morning that no official ruling had been handed down by the KHSAA yet but a ruling was expected sometime today

Anyone have any new info on this? Surely some kind of ruling has been made, the outcome of the ruling will directly impact who Mayfield and for that matter the other teams in the district #1 playoffs
