Facebook is good in that I have touched base with some folks who I would never talk to otherwise because of distance. By the same token, it's bad, because I can now talk regularly to people who I never talked anyway, and likely didn't necessarily want to.

 

It's great for gathering information. It sucks because information on you can be also gathered easily.

 

If I need to contact with someone and don't have their phone number, I can do that, which is nice and doesn't require us exchanging phone contacts if we don't need to be connected regularly.

 

It's up to you how much you want to engage in it, I guess. Zero sum for me, on balance.

I've never had a Facebook account so my view of it may be very limited.

 

It just seems to me that social media has created an environment where people care more about getting likes than actually being liked...

 

This world has always had its share of idiots. Facebook and other forms of social media gave them a place to gather and an extremely loud voice.

I personally find it hard to judge something that you have never tried. Just saw an obit from an old friends dad. Never would have known if not for Facebook. And to your point, I also saw a bunch of idiots posting stupid things and ranting out of control

Facebook was invented while I was in college. You had to have a .edu or college email to be a part of it. From there it expanded and now we have facebook anarchy

 

While I know it is not fair to say adults "ruined" facebook, there is definitely a difference in attitudes and decorum, generally speaking, among the 39 and under generation and those 40+. There are still millions my age and younger that have no business being on it either.

 

I deleted facebook from my phone 2-3 months ago. Haven't missed it a second. I live far away from family and friends so I am a good example of a person that can benefit from the connections, but not at the expense of having to see the same regurgitated divisiveness daily. The problem many facebook (social media in general) loyalists can't separate is that facebook becomes a false reality of what the world really is.

Facebook was awesome when it started. You had to have a .edu email address to sign up for an account, so when it was originally geared towards college-age students it was actually fun to be on. Now it's nothing but babies, dogs, and political propaganda.

Without a doubt it's more of a positive, as is all of social media. The negatives are too easy to avoid for them to be much of a factor.

What you see on there is mostly up to you. If you don't want to see babies, dogs, ect... don't be friends with people that post stuff like that, or just don't follow friends that post that stuff. I guess that's why I never understood the narrative that anyone destroyed facebook.

Nope! I get that it is a business but it is just overwhelming and deceiving. My buddy who "likes and recommends" the dollar shave club, has never liked or gone to the site.

Exclusivity is what made Facebook fun and cool, IMO.

Too late. Facebook hasn’t been my primary social media outlet for probably 7-8 years.
