Schools should not be allowed to 'play-up'. Its arbitrary decision. And nothing is supposed to be arbitrary in the world of KHSAA.

 

That said, I had a coach from a school who was losing a player to 'transfer' tell me he was OK with the students decision and supported. His take was that everyone should get 1 no-questions-asked 'transfer'. 2nd would be a no-questions-asked sit-out for 1 year. This makes a lot of sense and would reduce a lot of silliness.

That is an extremely sensible plan, that I could get behind. The only issue, is there should be an appeal process for things like divorce, families moving etc. There are some things that are out of a student athletes control and I'd have a hard time sitting them out.

If it was my kid, I would talk it over with him/her and see how they felt.

I would suggest a transfer, but leave it up to my child.

My comment may be a little off target, but personally I don’t like schools having the option to play up or move down. Set a number for each class, if you fall in that range, that’s the class you play in. Was this even an option before the 6 Class system?

This is a silly thread. The overwhelming majority of teams who play up choose to do so because they can be competitive there. Only a few do so for logistical reasons (travel) and aren't competitive. Pendleton Co. and Nelson Co. are ones who fit into this category, and they're rare. But at the end of the day, it's still the school's choice.
