October 17, 200619 yr Here is a link, to a "source" story that indicates Piniella wants the Cubs to pursue A-Rod. Thoughts and Comments, on if this trade would happen and who would the Cubs have to give up. Piniella wants A-Rod
October 17, 200619 yr I would say they would have to give up Ramirez and Wood/Prior: which I think would be a blessing. Get rid of one of those guys all they have ever been is bench warmer. Neither can stay healthy. If the Yanks eat some of the salary and take that trade I would do it in a heartbeat.
October 17, 200619 yr Remember, the Rangers are still paying part of A-Rods salary. If the Cubs make the trade, it won't put them in financial ruin.
October 17, 200619 yr If Piniella can persuade Alex to come to Chicago, and it is very likely. It would do a lot of good for the Cubs off and on the field. Ticket sales would get better. I agree that the Cubs would have to give up Prior or Wood and maybe Ramirez. But the Cubs nees pitching as well and can't afford to lose any pitcher. Yea, both Prior and Wood have been on the disabled list most of the past two seasons. Still, they are valuable to the team and I don't see the Yankees taking a chance on damaged goods. Maybe Ramirez and a minor league pitcher that is looking good and this deal can be done.
October 17, 200619 yr First off, the Cubs are one of the few teams with the payroll to land ARod. Secondly, the only players I would consider off-limits are Juan Pierre (who needs to be locked up, IMO), Derrek Lee, and Carlos Zambrano. I've also read where Piniella might want to pursue Ichiro Suzuki. The Tribune might be willing to expand the payroll since the Cubs have lost television market share in the city to the Sox.
October 17, 200619 yr The Yanks have made some poor decisions when it comes to pitchers but taking Kerry Wood would be near the top.

October 17, 200619 yr I think a change of scenery for A-Rod would benefit he & the Yankees. IMO A-Rod is a top notch ball player with a plate full of potential. A Cub uniform & back at SS may be the recipe he needs. The biggest concern would be could A-Rod handle the temper of Lou? He and Torre are compete opposites with their demeanor so it would be interesting to see how Alex reacts when he is being chewed or challenged to a dual by Sweet Lou.
October 17, 200619 yr IMO A-Rod is a top notch ball player with a plate full of potential. . Potential? 2000+ hits, approaching 500 HRs, 1300+ rbis and the guy has "potential?"
October 17, 200619 yr I don't see this deal getting done, but if it does then the Cubbies are on the right track to being a contender.
October 17, 200619 yr I'd like to see the Cubbies do well for once. It's been so long since they have.
October 17, 200619 yr Potential? 2000+ hits, approaching 500 HRs, 1300+ rbis and the guy has "potential?" Referring to his play in pinstripes. He has not lived up to his potential in NY so yes he still IMO has potential. I know what kind of player he is but he still has something to prove to the doubters. It is "what have you done for me lately"?

Piniella, was the manager when Alex came up as a rookie. Both have kept in touch over the years and both respect each other.
October 17, 200619 yr I think A-Rod would accept the chance to play for him again. With him and Derek Lee they would be contenders for the central. A-Rod could move back to SS where he would rather play and all would be good again!
