December 6, 20178 yr Lol I'm guessing you didn't play sports in high school? Kids put a lot into high school sports. When you have a kid playing I would say you wouldn't call it boring. I played baseball a couple years and basketball for a year. And I'm sure I will. I go to and cheer on my nieces and nephew's sporting events, but that doesn't mean they aren't boring as all get out.

December 6, 20178 yr If there are no transfer rules, can you still have rules against recruiting? How would you police recruiting?
December 6, 20178 yr I'll probably catch flack for this, but it's high school sports. It's pretty boring regardless. While I disagree with the contention that high school sports are boring, I do agree with the sentiment that it's just High School sports. Ultimately, a bunch of teenagers playing a game. For whatever reason, too often we try to make them out to be more than what they really are.

December 6, 20178 yr I'm surprised that we are 66 posts into this one and no one has mentioned anything about the money involved in transferring. Part of the reason that schools want to manage the transfer process has to do with ADA money. Some schools release it to a gaining, out of district school, others refuse to release the money. The control over transferring just happens to have an oversight committee, the KHSAA, for student athletes. If we have no transfer rules, schools have limited ability to forecast revenue streams and student enrollment numbers....given the difficulty in managing to a budget, this factor is all too common an administrative argument when dealing with a transfer student.

December 6, 20178 yr If it was just high school sports, then free college scholarships wouldnt be on the line. That’s true, but for 95% of high school athletes, there will be no college scholarships.
December 6, 20178 yr For goodness sakes, it's high school sports. Who cares? The whole ordeal of having to sit out a year in high school is just absurd. If there is no transfer rule. Then it basically will make high school sports free reign for recruiting. We already see how sketch college sports is getting with all the background deals and so forth. Just imagine what high school sports would end up like. High school sports can teach a person a lot of lessons. One of those lessons is how to work for something, and not just say hey ok I will go play just because. Plus were already in the age of self entitlement with these kids. Basically coaches will have even less power, because if a coach is tough on a kid. The kid can be just like fine, Ill just go to this school. I get what you are saying its high school, it should just be about kids playing. However there would be a lot of things and not all good that would come off of just letting kids be able to transfer wherever whenever. It probably would get to the point where a kid would go to this school in the fall for football, then transfer to this school in the winter because this basketball team is better, and then this school in the spring because this baseball team is better. Then the next year new schools based on which ones may have the best team coming back, etc.
December 7, 20178 yr Its def not for academic reasons. Otherwise, the Houston girl would have transferred too. I just think it is unfortunate the kids are put through this by their parents. How do you know it’s the parents. The kid wants to go to Cooper who cares let him play.

Would kids transfer from season to season?? No way. That thought is pure hyperbole, especially when so much of the state is rural and options are limited.

If people know they can can transfer basically anytime for any reason without having to worry about ever possibly missing games. People will take advantage of it. Yes it may not be as dramatic as switching schools for every sport season. But it happening year to year is a possibility. It already happened once even with the current rules and Holy Cross was a school that benefited from that kid going to a third high school in his first 3 years a few years ago. If there is no transfer rule to even make them think there is a possibility they won't get to play. It will end up being lots of switching all the time imo.

Who cares if they switch schools each year? Why does it matter? You're acting like it'll happen in waves. It still isn't going to happen very frequently.

Agree to disagree on it not happening frequently once people knoe there is no longer a rule in place. Plus imo it will continue to lead to less and less coaches even coaching than already. In today's age of entitlement with players and even parents thinking their kids are the best and social media. It's harder and harder for coaches to even hold kids accountable because of how things are today. Now it just would make it more free reign because coaches even more wouldn't be able to hold kids accountable for fear that it would upset the player or parent and they just would switch schools and could do so easily. I get what your point is kids should be able to play where they want. I think all districts should be open enrollment so kids can go where they want when they get to high school. However there has to be some rule in place, or else imo you setting up to ruin high school sports as a whole and also to continue losing coaches.

Well, the thing is, there are only so many starting spots on each team. There simply isn't room for everybody to just transfer whenever they want. And if somebody wants to transfer for a better opportunity to play, so what?? Again, while transfers may increase, you're going to see a handful, rather than widespread occurrences. So not enough spots coupled with the fact that it's really inconvenient to go to school outside of your district is going to limit the number of people that will want to transfer.
