Covington Holy Cross 88 Beechwood 11

I am not telling the team who is up by A LOT to stop playing, but you can walk the ball up the floor every time you can run sets pass the ball around and then shoot. You have seen a lot of basketball and so have I and the games that are good those teams are making a lot more than 1 or 2 passes.

If some of you are ok with layups which is an easy shot than any being up by 60 well then there is no changing your mind but an 88-11 score is ridiculous especially against 8th, freshman and sophomores.

Again numerous folks from both "camps" I've conversed with have stated Holy Cross did nothing wrong.........so why are folks still upset?

When did Holy Cross' starters exit the game? What was the score?

I have talked to some myself and a few from HC were embarrassed that the score was that way. Some of the people folks I talked to said they thought it could have been handled differently. They said it was clear to everyone during the JV game that the varsity game was going to be bad and that it didn't have to be that way.

We will see by future scores between Beechwood and other teams if this couldn't be helped to score 88. I'm guessing there is one more team that will run it up as high as they can and I bet most could name them. Others will settle for 50s or 60s play their younger kids a lot and play zone packed in to allow Beechwood to have a chance on offense. You can back off your starters and not press but if your still playing tight man to man your gonna get steals and lay ups galore. 88 points with a running clock for the last 45-50 points is scoring very aggressively. Watch future scores of games and the truth will be told if it could have been avoided at this level. We will see.

Just because people in both camps believe that Holy Cross did nothing wrong, it does not mean that Holy Cross did nothing wrong.

That team has a new coach, but we will see.

This has absolutely no bearing on the argument. This is Varsity level basketball, not categorized by grade level, but by competition level.

You have a new coach at Beechwood, who likely had no hand in this schedule, nor would it make much difference.

The alternative view to this "run up the score" rant, is to view the game as a practice and run your sets (which I'm sure they did) and execute on those sets. If that's a layup, then it's a layup. To attempt to dictate the type of shot (a lesser percentage by your description) is the wrong approach. Neither the offensive nor the defensive team gets better by playing "monkey in the middle" for 16 minutes of running clock.

Is the score lopsided, yes. Is it difficult, as a player, coach and parent, to take it on the chin every night like this, yes. Does it help anyone to hold the ball and wait for the clock to run out, no. If that is the strategy, how could Beechwood ever get better ? Why not just scrap the season and not have a program ?

Flawed logic in the argument....no one wants to be on the losing end of these games, no one wants to sit in the stands for these games, no one wants to play these games and no one wants to officiate these games....but if you are Beechwood, you better work at getting better at the game, during the game if you don't want the same experience next time.

Good luck to Beechwood....I like their kids and coaches, always respectful and play hard.....just not going to win a lot of games, and they seem to be able to embrace that a lot better than some outside observers.

It was a running for almost the whole game and to score 88 points is ridiculous and you as a coach going in know its going to be an easy win adjust for heaven sakes its one game.

No, it only ran the second half....or 16 minutes of time and I have no doubt that adjustments were made.

Athletic disparities happen all the time and it is incumbent on the teams with lesser talent to make the scheduling decisions that are best for their team.

In this case, Beechwood would have done better to not have a Varsity team, or only play a JV schedule that was hand picked....there has to be some culpability on the part of the team with lesser ability as well.

You have admit 88 points in a girls game is a lot of points with a running clock that's what I don't get.

The bolded I agree with 100%

We agree, it is a lot of points. The game in it's totality is likely a better indicator of the sportsmanship factor (which is what I suspect your position is about) rather than just the final score.

Yes it is, I stated that in an earlier post. I just don't agree with doing that to a team that you were clearly going to beat handily.

Maybe no one knows, but I will ask again:

When did Holy Cross' starters exit the game? What was the score?

Not sure the exact time, but during the 3rd quarter. So when the game was 48-2, the best players made an appearance on the floor. I did not stay for the fourth quarter, but they my have gotten in then as well.

I heard the Holy Cross starters played in the 4th, but lets pretend like they didn't.

If the starters were playing in the 3rd quarter when the score was 48-2 (with a running clock) tells you all you need to know about whether the score was being run up.
