I really do not see how he could. I was present on the practice field the day that Dusty Bonner left the team. It was handled very poorly by the guy in charge and showed me his character (which is none) when he could do a young kid the way he handled Bonner and walk away without remorse. Uk should have fired him then & maybe the problems would not have grown as they did.

Excellent insight, that many of us fans never see.

 

I do believe a coach, needs to separate himself emotionally from his players and that is his task, to motivate and lead, but to be a leader a person must posses character....

Brooks or Mumme, is no comparison at all....I'll take Brooks over him, any day.

This I will agree with, I have been openly critical of Brooks but I 100% agree with him over Mumme anytime.

:thumb: :thumb: There is no doubt in my mind that Bonner should have been the #1 QB of that team. I know a lot will disagree but that is the way I feel. I agree - Mumme should have been gone immediately if not sooner right then. I still find it hard to believe that some would miss him.:confused: As far as his football goes, yeah his "O" was exciting for the fans and all but there were probably some high schools that played better defense. I would ask all of those who "loved and miss his style" - what good does it do you to score 40pts. a game if the opponets score 50? I guess that I am too old school and am a firm believer in "Defense, special teams and being able to run the football and mix in the pass WINS!".

When only a few defensive players were even considered part of the team by Mumme, very few positive things (even the two bowl rings I have) could have made by experience at UK positive. My biggest positives are the bookends to the Mumme tenure. I developed a great relationship with Joker Phillips as he recruited me before Curry was fired. The end of my time when Morris was named head coach, and I was considered more than just a "JV nobody" and recieved a scholarship was great. I enjoyed that 2-9 season more as a whole than the two bowl seasons.

A University that names their football field after a basketball coach should be expected to bungle a hire like Mumme.

I wonder how many people realize that after the 2-9 season that was Mummes last, UK had more players either get drafted or sign rookie free agent deals than Florida State did that year. UK had 8 players that year that were either on NFL rosters or in NFL Europe while FSU had 7. Marlon McCree heads that class as the starting Strong Safety for the Chargers.

Without getting to personal or revealing too much information, were any of the players hearing, being made aware of, sensing all the "off the field problems" surrounding that time.

 

Again, without naming names, were many considering transferring to other schools, to get out from under the negative situation.

You know how if you leave a hot dog in the microwave too long it explodes, but you may not see any signs? It was kinda like that.

 

Winning cures (or just hides) problems.

 

After the Uof L overtime loss (the Thunderstorm game) things started to come apart, and more players could sense it. After the Florida game, things became more full blown (Tony Franklin writes about it in his book-I can't speak for the entire thing as far as endorsement, but some is dead on). That team was 2-9, but under differnt cirumstances I believe we could have been 9-2.

CC how many of those players that got drafted had a pro career? I sure thought when he ran out of Curry's players the talent level dropped off. Am I way off base on this?

Coach Mumme brought back excitement with his style of play, but I will have to disagree with the worst hire in history. I think that distinction belongs to our current coach!!

 

I have to disagree. Yes, his style of offense was exciting. But unlike our current coach, Mumme inherited a team with talent (Couch, Yeast, etc) and Brooks inherited a team where the best talent was graduating, had very few good recruits coming in and a reduction in schollys. They were handed totally different situations and levels of talent.

 

I didn't think Mumme was the worse hire in UK history, but the trouble he and Bassett left UK in has to put them at or near the top of the list. Mumme's goal was immediate success at the expense of the future of the program. Brooks is trying to do it the right way and the Cats are getting better.
