I can basically agree with you here LMB. I would however say that Ga. Tech in the ACC is pretty darn tough and Va. Tech can be tough. I would rate them 1. SEC (no question, 8 good teams, 6 VERY good teams) 2. Big 10 3. Big 12 4. ACC 5. a tie between the Pac10 (USC and the 9 dwarfs) and the Big east (UL and WVU, no one else).

 

Yeah I agree with your post. I do think Va Tech and Ga Tech are both quality teams.

I think to say Auburn is a pretender because they have 1 off game is pretty crazy. Are the a National Title team? No, but they are still in pretty good shape to possibly even get into the a BCS Bowl.

If Auburn beats Florida on Saturday, they are right there for almost anything they desire.

I get tired of all these OOC arguments by citing records. And there are plenty of them. They are next to meaningless because almost all of the wins are against inferior opponents whether they be I-AA, Mid-major, or BCS Conference Bottom dwellers, and virtually all of the losses the conference takes from outside can be attributed to it's bottom feeders playing superior competition. This goes for any conference, not just the SEC. How can that be a valid measuring stick?

I wasn't attempting to prove the competitiveness (good or bad) of the SEC through it's OOC schedule, but more so to make the point that because of thier OOC schedule we really don't know what the SEC has. I don't feel that the SEC provides a clear enough picture, due to the lack of big OOC games. In other words, with thier OOC schedule all the SEC teams could be good to mediocre instead of great to good but we would be non the wiser because they didn't play any significant games OOC.

 

I'm critical of the opinion the the SEC is the "runaway best conference". I don't feel that there is enough factual support to legitimize hyperbolies like "If you don't think the SEC is the best you need your head examined" or "Everyone knows the SEC is the best conference". As I said in another post I believe the SEC does not play the best quality football by any degree. In watching Mountian West games I can usually see lesser athletes play "better football" than the usual ultra conserative, defensive end dominated SEC play.

It doesn't matter the type of football they play, they would beat any other conference heads up IMHO, and that's why they're the best conference this year.

I really don't think it would mattter.....A team like LSU would beat any team from the MWC any time any where IMO.
