The Browns are 1-21 under the current regime... a front office consisting of Sashi Brown and Paul Depodesta, and Head Coach Hue Jackson. Some Browns fans are calling for a change due to the dismal beginning for this regime in terms of wins and losses. There is also indication that Hue Jackson is getting impatient and pointing blame towards the personnel guys for the inability to win. After all, they unloaded some talented older players, like Joe Haden, in order to go younger and stop paying salaries that were no longer being earned. The question is whether Jimmy Haslem has the nerve to allow the current personnel guys to finish the job. Should he give in to the calls for change and replace his front office, the new decision makers will inherit something that no new regime in Cleveland has inherited in decades--a solid foundation on which to build. Doug Lesmireses says if this front office is fired, the new General Manager will oversee a winner and the credit will go to the wrong guy.

 

Lesmireses, longtime Buckeye's reporter for the PD, makes the case for staying the course. He says the focus shouldn't be on wins and losses now, or even some misses that the new front office has made in the draft. Many are pointing to passing on Carson Wenz last year and DeShaun Watson this year. Lesmerises says the focus should be on what trading in the draft has netted the Browns in draft picks over the last two years and next year. There have been quality acquisitions that have laid a foundation for future wins. He mentions the good and the bad in this list:

 

-A defensive line built around two high and productive picks, one of them, Myles Garrett, a supposed can't-miss the whole league agreed on.

 

- Solid linebackers and a secondary featuring an interesting if uncertain talent in Jabrill Peppers, playing out of position, and another guy or two who could help.

 

- An offensive line that looks set and should be solid.

 

- That young tight end, David Njoku, drafted when he still wasn't old enough to drink, who is raw but with a high ceiling.

 

- Corey Coleman, who can't stay healthy yet who still could be something, but otherwise a receiving corps with huge problems.

 

- There's a need for a more dynamic running back.

 

And then there's quarterback.

 

What about quarterback. If DeShone Kizer doesn't rise to the top this season, the Browns own 2 first round and 3 second round picks in the 2018 draft. That is thanks to passing on Wenz and trading down instead of taking Watson. A new GM would love to be in this position and he wouldn't have been the one laying the ground work to make it happen. Brown and Depodesta did that. So, why get rid of them? Let them see this through. Give them another season to get a winner in place.

 

They are in position to get the top QB in the first round, perhaps Sam Darnold of USC, a WR in the first round, and a top RB like Alabama's Damien Harris. Those additions to the offense that is now in place would be a huge step towards a winner for Cleveland. Wenz and Watson both went to teams that already had talent surrounding them. Wenz would not have that luxury in Cleveland last year nor Watson this year. But next year, could be a significant step forward for the Browns... thanks to the current front office of Sashi Brown and Paul Depodesta. Twelve players from their first two drafts are on the field and making significant contributions including Miles Garrett. Let them add to that pool of talent in the 2018 draft and then judge them after the 2018 season. Three years will be enough to tell if they have the franchise headed in a winning direction. Two seasons is not enough time to accurately judge whether they are accomplishing their goal.

 

Lesmirises makes a convincing case that the fans should be patient, Jackson should be patient, and especially, owner Jimmy Haslem should be patient. Don't pull the plug. Stay the course in Cleveland.

Imo, they gave up on Romeo as HC way too soon several years back... maybe they'll stay the course with Hue, because they haven't stayed the course with anybody and it's kept them in the cellar.

If there is any city in America that "deserves" an NFL team it's Cleveland. The ownership group in Cleveland is who doesn't deserve an NFL team.

They should stay the course. Eventually it will pay off.

 

Agreed and have patience they have a boat load of draft picks next year.

It is a win now league, but everyone knew it would take more than 1.33 seasons to turn around things. If you thought Cleveland was suddenly going to turn into a contender, then why hire Brown and DePodesta?

I agree with the blueprint their using but I don't think it can be effective when everyone's not on the same page. When management is making deals that infuriates the coaching staff, that's a recipe for major problems.

They have once again changed their starting QB and re-named Kizer the starter....This marks 20 QB changes in their last 43 games. That's absurd and ridiculous.

One of my friends, who is a Browns fan, told me that he envy's me as a Jags fan. I never knew what rock bottom was til he told me that...

As someone who lives in Cleveland but not a Browns fan I can give my opinion. Right now most of the struggles fall in the front office. They keep under cutting what the coaches want. The coaches had to beg to take Garrett and then at #12 Hue wanted Watson but was over ruled because they let him take Garrett. Sashi Brown is extremely unqualified for his role right now.

i think Lipton bash nailed it. If they do any thing, it's get rid of Brown and De Podesta. I would search for a experienced,qualified G.M., who is a Hue Jackson fan,and can be on the same page as the coaching staff.Tthen.......tell Jimmy Haslem to shut up,keep his nose out off running the football operation,and just sign the frigg'in checks!!! But fat chance of that happening!!! To me,front office is a mess.Give Jackson another year or two.But to me,Jackson has to get a offensive coordinator also. He needs to over see the whole team. Some of his decisions in game situations, have been god awful!!! But chances are,they'll "F" it up ....AGAIN!!!

I don't know that you are right about the preferences during the draft. Jackson supposedly wanted to take Malik Hooker at #12, not Watson. He was up on Trubiski but not at #1. They probably would have made a deal to move up from #12 to get Trubiski but he was gone at #2. There was discussion on draft day but everybody in the Browns draft room agreed they should take Garrett at #1. They traded the #12 pick and moved down to #25 and took Jabrill Peppers. That's two strong defensive picks in the first round, followed by DeShone Kizer at #52. That's a pretty strong start to the draft.

 

I think where the coaches have a beef is when the front office guys let a veteran go, like Joe Haden who could help the team this year and get nothing in return to help this year. It makes it hard to win and hard to coach when you weaken the team right before the season starts by dumping a vet with a big contract. But one could argue that the evaluation of Haden was in line with where other teams rated him. Pittsburgh paid him the same amount the Browns offered him in a contract renegotiation.
