I think that the time has come to pull the plug on this series. Three straight blowout wins by the Golden Eagles and the future looks like more of the same. The Apple Bowl used to hold some suspense for fans of both teams, but Matney's arrival pretty much ended that. Games like this one do neither team much good.

 

Central might want to wait to see who takes over for Phillip Haywood at Belfry (when he decides to hang 'em up) before they decide to quit this series. I don't mean that to sound trite, but...it could matter a lot.

It creates a huge shot in the arm for both school's athletic budgets is about all you can say. That in itsself may be what keeps the series alive.

Speaking of keeping the series alive I found out something very interesting today at Central's pep rally. I was told by some administrators at JC that Paintsville has still not signed the Apple Bowl contract for the next two years. Why is this? I've heard for three years now from Tiger fans that Coach Matney and Johnson Central would end the Apple Bowl and look who is dragging there feet. Johnson Central signed there part of it Tuesday. This game is a tradition of Johnson County and it needs to continue. Heck fire Johnson Central lost eight Apple Bowls in a row and you didn't see them throwing in the towel. This imo is the best rivalry in the state and I would hate to see this game canceled. The ball is in Paintsville's court. Come Coach Allen, Coach Runyon (A.D) and other officials in the Paintsville Independent school system get in gear and get this game on for the next two years. What is the hold up? Lord knows Johnson Central took there lumps in this series but they didn't quit. Come on guys show some man hood and keep this series alive.

What a game by shawn Grim 211 yards on 11 carries in the FIRST HALF alone. And congrats to him on the wymt player of the week. The new complex is going to be awsome also. Great to see JK in there tonight. Great game JC. Time for Greenup.

Central has stepped up to the plate and signed there end of the bargain it's Paintsville that's dragging there feet.

Just give JC 8 more years, considering Matney is still there, and JC will have the all time series record in there favor. That is if Paintsville is willing to allowing this to go on that long. :thumb:

JC may be down 7 games in this series... give them 7 more years and they will be tied up. Who cares about an all-time series.

Paintsville will not be competitive with Johnson Central as long as the Golden Eagles have a coach as good or better than Paintsville. All else being equal, JC's talent pool is too deep for Paintsville. However, we all saw how quickly the pendulum swung back in the Tigers' favor when Bill Musick returned to Raceland.

 

Until Matney leaves and JC hires another incompetent head coach, the Apple Bowl is a waste of time for both schools. A 20-13 all time edge in the series will do nothing to help the Tigers win in the future. All that can help the Tigers compete again is Matney's departure followed by a blunder by the JC administration in hiring a replacement. Hopefully, neither of those events will occur.

 

Congrats to Coach Allen and his wife on the new arrival! Good luck to the Tigers in the rest of their games. I think that they will be hosting at least one playoff game in a few weeks.

Matney made a good statement in his post-game speech... "there is a team coming down the road in 3 weeks that I want to beat" that team being Ashland. First JC has to play Greenup County, then they have an open week, then play Ashland.

I believe that Matney will be at JC for a very long time. But I could be wrong.

 

Both teams came away injury free and showed good sportsmanship on the field. To my knowledge, there was no pranks or gags by either school.

If you have been to Paintsville's field, you will know what I am talking about. The rail around the field was full all the way around and about 7 people deep. Paintsville might have had 500 people there. Everybody else was wearing black and gold. The bleachers on JC's side was full at 5:30. and most of Paintsville's bleachers were full of JC fans. There field is just way to small to host these kind of crowds.

There was an apoligy made by Paintsville before the game for what was said in the "you might be a greaser" top 10 list. I'm glad an apoligy was made, but I'm also glad JC was able to do their talking on the field!

I failed to mention that the Paintsville annoucer said something to the affect of... "we are competitors on the field, but we are neighbors first. " The announcer also said that the list that caused so much talk was written by an immature indiviual. Other than that list, it was a quit week here in Johnson County.
