Mexitucky, you are as anti-Dunn apparently as I am pro-Dunn. The bottom line is this: you win games by scoring more runs than your opponents, period. The pitching is what is, but Dunn has continued to drive in more and score more runs than anyone else on that team...period. You don't like his inconsistency? Me neither. You want to give up on him at 26? Crazy, IMHO.

 

Who are you comparing him to? The Reds have a nice complimentary line-up with random guys stepping up here or there. Dunn is EXPECTED to carry the team, he failed. He hasn't done well when the team has needed him to step up. Are you considering him irreplacable? Is he on the same level as a Ryan Howard? He definitely hasn't stepped up like a Pujols. Look, the Reds have held onto him for him to become the superstar. He hasn't reached that level. The Reds have left themselves with no other options at this point, so you have to keep him.

He's only 26. You act like we talking about a 35 year old man who is going to get worse(unless its Bonds:D ). He didn't have great year like I thought he would. But at this point I say there is no way I would let him go.

Fine, let's extend the parameters. How many homeruns did he hit, or how many hits in general did he get, to give the Reds the lead, or to extend their lead when leading by less than 3? Would you consider that a fair assesment of clutch hitting? He has 92 RBIs, how many of those came with the game already out of question? Those are stats that I don't know, but from the games I watched, if there were runners in scoring position with two outs, a K was coming. In response to the post about the center fielder? I'm not a huge fan of his either.

Again, did I hope/expect more? Yes. Is there someone on the Reds team presently or in the farm system that can replace what he does? No. Is there someone in the NL that can put up the numbers he does? Not many.

Right now the Reds have painted themselves in a corner with Dunn b/c I don't truly believe that the Reds will get a good No. 1 for him. I am of the Billy Bean school. I believe that statistics can tell the value of a player to the offense. However, the statistics one uses to judge a player can cast that player in two totally different lights. In terms of HR's, nobody is going to come in and hit 40 for the amount of money the Reds have. However, there is a chance that they can get a guy to get 100 RBIs. I have seen enough of the Angels, Marlins, and White Sox to see that you need one or two good power pitchers, a great defense, and timely hitting. Dunn offers neither timely hitting nor even average defense. He gets 100 RBIs when he should have 120+ given his power numbers and apparent great eye. The 100 runs would be tough to replace, I will give you that. However, there are alternatives that may be cheaper and just as efficient.

There is a bigger problem than Dunn on the Redlegs. Individually each player has his merits statistically, as a team these players are just not good enough. As far as Dunn being a budding superstar, simply not the case. His game has not improved sinceday one. He is what he is. A poor left fielder that hits prodigious home runs, that hit .240, and is one of the leaders in strikeouts. What he is not is a superstar. There are none of those on this ball club. If the Reds don't turn this roster over ( ala Bengals) they will continue to to struggle. With this team they lose 90-100 next year, as they decline in ability and their division foes improve. The Reds need to build around Harang, Arroyo, Phillips, and Edwin. Keep Freel in a utility role, and Valentin as a backup catcher and ph. Unfortunately such a purge will not be possible, so Reds fans will be in for a downer next season.

I agree with you on Dunner...he is always getting the rec due to the bombs he sometimes hits and needs to get better at producing when it matters. I love the camera shots they recently got of him during the Florida series when they actually still had a shot... he was seen atleast 2 times yawning out in the outfield on Defense. Sorry we are boring you dunner. Sorry you cant be out on your Bass Boat with a dip in knocking back a Bud Heavy.....I say trade him for pitching......some American League team would love to have him.
