Why have 1 dead period a year that applies to all? Why not have specific dead periods for each sport/activity that would work with that sport/activities competition schedule better?

Pretty much every sport has some sort of year round conditioning so having a different dead period for each sport would be more difficult to enforce. Having one dead period while school isn't in session is easier to enforce and is better for parents and players. Plus I can't think of any other school based events that take place in Late June/early July, so it just makes sense to do the dead period when KY does. It literally affects no other sports.

In February, the Central Hardin Lady Bruins won the team bowling state championship at Collins-Eastland in Lexington, beating Harrrison County in 5 games. With this win, as well as setting state records for baker high game of 267 and baker high 2 game series of 491, they qualified for the National High School Bowling Championships in Smyrna TN June 24th and 25th. Because the KHSAA mandated dead period starts on June 25th, they are unable to play in this tournament as a representative of Central Hardin High School, cannot wear any clothing that suggest that they represent Central Hardin (which they do), and cannot have any coaches present for the singles matches on Sunday, June 25th. A petition was denied by the KHSAA for a reason unknown to me at this time. Denying these ladies the opportunity to represent their school on a national level and to be recognized as possible national champions by another name other than Central Hardin High School is a travesty. The KHSAA should be ashamed of themselves for letting beaurocracy get in the way of the human spirit and the opportunity to be called Central Hardin Lady Bruins, National Champions. I wonder how the KHSAA would approach this if the Lady Bruins just happen to win this tournament? Would they try to capitalize on this by selling merchandise that stated "CENTRAL HARDIN LADY BRUINS, NATIONAL CHAMPIONS? Would they ever be recognized in KHSAA record books for this feat?

 

I don't think it's possible to disagree with you anymore then I do. First, I thought the KHSAA had a policy in place that once the state championship for a team sport had been completed Kentucky teams were barred from competing in so called national championships? I could be wrong but when there was a smattering of talk about a possible Trinity/Don Bosco football game a few years ago that was cited as one reason why it couldn't happen.

 

Second the dead period is and should to be rigidly enforced with no exceptions granted, EVER. If not there WILL (not may WILL) be coaches that start actively looking for ways that they can be "waived" for all or part of the dead period. Once one waiver is granted it is inevitable that others will be sought. Kentucky schools will survive 2 weeks off (if up to me it would be a month) and these young ladies can compete without sanctioning of the KHSAA.

I definately think the KHSAA should have given them a waiver, but I don't see how this is a Title IX violation. Allowing a girl's sports team to play during dead time and not any boy's teams could be viewed as reverse discrimination.

 

I could be wrong, and I usually am, but I think the disadvantageous seasons means giving the boys a better season. For instance, allowing the boys to play basketball in the winter, but making the girls play in the spring when the boys are done. The dead time is equally applied to all.

 

There are exceptions to every rule, and I think a common sense exception would be to allow any team the opportunity to participate on a national level.

 

KHSAA should have given a valid reason for denying their petition. Why can't they use some common sense? I thought using Title IX could make them reconsider their position. I don't truly think it is Title IX situation, but to not allow them to compete is wrong. I used the ruling to get to the last part, "No team should be forced to compete in uniforms other than that of high school of the competitors".

What if a kid plays multiple sports? The only way for it to be a truly dead period (as it should be) is the one date all sports system now in place.

Actually it literally does affect another sport, archery. The world tournament this year is July 22nd, 2 years ago it was the same, 3 years ago it started July 11th, ect... Even if the tournament doesn't fall in the dead period the teams can't practice leading up to it.

How could Hardin spin this to Title IX? Your example is not at all related to this case.

KHSAA is and should only be concerned about STATE championships. Archery is a recent addition to KHSAA. If the powers that be within the archer world were worried about this conflict, why did they petition for KHSAA sanctioning?

I know why they are there, lived with them from beginning. They still need to reconsider sports that finish in the dead period. No coaches, no practices, no home uniforms.
