Why or Why Not?

For the record, Yes, I think schools should be required to report stats to the KHSAA.

 

KHSAA Mission Statement

 

To provide governance and leadership in order to regulate and progressively administer the highest quality interscholastic sports and sport-activities in an efficient manner, and promote the values of participation for all involved in education-based athletics and school-based sports. The KHSAA will work collaboratively with its member schools to recognize and promote the primary focus of high school academic success and college and career readiness for the student participants, risk minimization for all participants in the programs, and the efficient administration of the education-based athletic program inthe schools.

Speaking generally, I think it is good for Schools to answer to someone and when it comes to all KHSAA Sports every school answers to the KHSAA.

 

Frankly, any school that fails to report their stats is insubordinate and the School, Super, Principal, AD, and Head Coach should be punished.

The stats requirement was put in place after I left Kentucky, so I never got to personally hear the pros and cons from coaches, AD's, etc.

 

But I never understood the reasoning for folks to prepare scouting reports for their upcoming opponents.

Opponents are going to get that info anyway. If everyone just provides it, it eliminates work for everyone. Kind of like film exchange. It is now mandatory. Before, coaches spent tons of time going around and getting film behind their opponents back instead of just getting it from them. Seemed like a ridiculous waste of time when film could have just been traded. One of the best rule changes in the last several years.

As a statistician, I don't mind submitting them to the KHSAA for my school in a timely manner. The KHSAA stat interface is ancient and cumbersome. It would be nice if they allowed automatic uploads from external files (such as the MaxPreps format).

Here's a serious question.

 

If there is a requirement for keeping stats updated and a school doesn't comply should they be penalized? If so, how?

No. Pain in the rear to many schools who do not have a stats staff so it ends up in the coach's lap along with 1000 other things.

Well...for clarification purposes...I meant to say, "Why would you prepare a scouting report on yourself...for consumption by future opponents?" And I was thinking basketball.

 

I was used to the idea of exchanging football films, but I heard plenty of complaints about quality, how much of the game was filmed, timeliness in getting films each week, etc.

Why wouldn't a team want stats done for their team? I am constantly analyzing stats of my team. You're not doing your job if you are not.
