May 23, 20179 yr It has been the season of graduations for my family. Over the past 11 days, I've attended 3 of my children's graduation at each level - Middle School, High School and College. Both the Middle School and the High School have 400+ students in their respective graduating classes. The college graduating class consisted of about 600 students. In order, I attended the following ceremonies: College - 1 hour 20 minutes Middle School - 1 hour 45 minutes High School - 2 hours I found it weird that the shortest graduation time was the college ceremony, which got me thinking: Why? I see no reason why a Middle/High School graduation should take close to 2 hours. At both of these ceremonies, almost 30 minutes was spent on just getting all students in their proper seats before we even started. I would think a College graduation should take the longest, as it is the more important educational accomplishment. For a Middle/High School graduation ceremony to run significantly long is absurd. Agree or disagree?

May 23, 20179 yr They have graduation for Middle School? I've been to preschool and 5th grade so far for my daughter. In 2 years I will have to go to an 8th grade one. To be fair they call it a promotion not graduation. Still dumb.

May 23, 20179 yr UK Law School graduation was less than 1 hr. but only a little over 100 in the graduating class. There were several speakers, but they were all brief. Though significant in many cases, these things can be the most boring thing in the world.
May 23, 20179 yr Speaking of graduations... I went to one last night and it was something to see. There were direct orders several times for parents/the audience to be silent while the kids names were announced and to hold applause til the end. Well you began to notice that the families of the students graduating with C laude, S laude, M laude etc... were all very respectful and followed the rules and watched in silence as their child went across the stage. The rules went out the window when the students graduating without honors came across the stage. It felt like we were at a concert at points... it was embarrassing honestly. The people wondering why the younger generations are the way that they are probably need to take a look in the mirror at who raised them. The most simple directions and adults cannot even follow them. The only excuse I could come up with is that this is the only person in their entire extended family that had an education so they felt the need to scream like wild hillbillies. Another example, end of the ceremony the principal asks that everyone stay seated until the students have exited the arena. As soon as he finished his sentence 3 different families in front of us stood up and walked out of the arena. It was unbelievable.

May 23, 20179 yr A 400 student graduation at high school should last no longer than 90 minutes at a high school. On the other topic. I refuse to attend Preschool, kindergarten, etc. graduations. High School and College, proudly and gladly, I attend. The rest is just overboard. I did not attend 3 of my grandkids graduation stuff, 2 preschool and one kindergarten. The lovely lady did, though. I don't think I missed any school concerts, plays or the kind, though. Those don't bother me, they are usually short and funny. I will admit I watched the videos of all three graduations, though. One live, two delayed.
May 23, 20179 yr I guess it basically awards night for my sons 5th grade class. He has had As and Bs all year and 2 years perfect attendance.
May 23, 20179 yr We went to my niece's graduation at FSU a couple of weeks ago. It was the first of 3 sessions and had over 2000 students, undergrad, graduate, and doctorate. If it wasn't for hooding ceremony for the doctoral graduates, the ceremony would have been around 2 hours and 20 minutes. 2:20 was the elapsed time when I looked at my watch after the undergrads and graduate school grads had received their diplomas. As far has the behavior of the those watching, about 10-15 thousand of us, it was no less rowdy than the high school graduations I've been to. However, the announcer never slowed a beat for the cheering. That guy was good. There were some real tongue twisters in that list and he never once hesitated. As far as all the graduation ceremonies before high school ... Life is too short and I don't get to spend enough time with my grandchildren to stop me from seeing them, regardless of how useless I think the ceremonies are. I have attended and will continue to attend as many graduations as they have and celebrate each one with them.

I do see mine a lot and that does play into my decisions not to attend. Probably stubborn and just should suck it up, but this one just gets drives me batty. The grandkids have no clue, however. The kids roll their eyes at me and just know how I am with things like this.
