Newport Catholic 8 Dixie 7 (8 innings)

 

As I was reading the 9th Region JV Championship thread it brought back memories of the 1982 9th Region JV Championship game.

 

That season we, NewCath, were standing at an 8-8 record. We won the 1st 3 games of the tourney to reach the finals against a Dixie team that we were familiar with. In one of only two high school sports highlights of my career, I threw a 2-hit shutout and had 2 hits, including a 2-run double in beating the Red Colonels earlier in the season. So when we got to Boone Co. for the '82 championship game, Head Coach Bill Vogt told me I would be getting the start. Unfortunately for me it would NOT come close to that earlier performance.

 

The Red Colonels wasted no time getting me out of the game.....with one-out and 2 on, and a run in, up steps David Cain who hits a curve ball (that curved into the path of his bat:lol2:) that I swear is still in orbit to this day. Coach Vogt walks to the mound and takes me out and hands the ball to shortstop Bobby Gesenhues who promptly gives up another 3 runs in the inning, and we find ourselves down 7-0 after a half inning.

 

Bobby and our defense goes to work and we somehow are able to chip away at the plate to tie things up at 7-7 after 7, and it's on to extra innings. The Red Colonels get nothing in their half of the 8th, and we somehow get the bases loaded in the bottom of the 8th and win the game in the most un-ordinary of fashions.....a bases loaded Hit By Pitch of Billy Webster.

What year did you graduate? I have cousins that went to NCC. can't believe I haven't brought this up before.

I get sucked into thread like this, like what could be interesting about a JV baseball game from 1982 (kind of like when Moonlight Graham questions why Ray Kinsella finds him after 50 years), then I read about Bob Gesenhues involvement and I think I was supposed to open this thread. Thanks for sharing that LB.

Senior year had a PERFECT game through 4 2/3 innings up on the "hill" against Walton Verona. High fly ball hit to right-center where center fielder Bobby Vogt and right fielder Dan Albrand both go for it and they both watch the ball fall inches between them, damn underclassmen. LOL A batter later I lost the shutout, but did get the win.

Can't believe it's been 35 years since this sorry lookin' bunch (LOL) hit the diamond.

 

3 years ago at our 30th class reunion we reminisced about this one.

Stirrups. Never understood them, but they were cool.

Bobby Gesenhues - Kid Galahad, all around athlete, best sport was softball post high school.

seeing some of the guys in the picture, now I know how NCC became such a softball power in the mid 80's

Jimmy indeed graduated with me. He was a Newport Police officers for awhile, haven't seen him in some time.
