Regarding the bolded, do you mean Lincoln? Grant lived until 1885 and oversaw much of the reconstruction of the south following the war. In fact, his administrations were riddled with scandal over corruption during reconstruction. Sorry, just wondering.

Grant also oversaw the emptying of many a bottle of whiskey into his innards, during the war and after.

I've always thought that first picture looked like something that had been damaged, the way the footings are. Who would've thought they would've built such a long lasting structure off of that!
