Regarding the bolded, do you mean Lincoln? Grant lived until 1885 and oversaw much of the reconstruction of the south following the war. In fact, his administrations were riddled with scandal over corruption during reconstruction. Sorry, just wondering.

 

Yes, you are right... It was Grant's finest hour in that the terms of surrender were very generous. Much better than Lee had even hoped. And too bad Lincoln didn't have the opportunity to oversee the rebuilding following the war.
