Binged watched this series this past weekend on Netflix.

 

Tough watch at times, but a very powerful series.

 

As I understand, it is the #1 show talked about on twitter since its release a month ago. Controversial with some of the content shown.

I saw that this was on the news this morning, but didn't get to see why. Something about parents not thrilled with some of the content?

 

I don't know anything about it, what is controversial about it?

It's about a HS girl that kills herself.

 

She sends recording tapes (after the fact) to various people that are her reasons why she committed suicide.

I don't want to ruin it, but some of the things that happen to some of the characters is shown. Also keeping in mind they are high school aged kids. They post warnings prior to three episodes about the graphic and sensitive nature of the content.

There are some people that are unhappy that they actually show the suicide and how it actually happens. It is a tough scene to watch. But I think that was the point...to let people know that suicide is not a pretty thing.

 

I binged it over the weekend as well. I thought it was a very powerful show.

Putting some pieces together. Does she send tapes to 13 different people explaining why she did it and how they played a part in it? Basically making sure they knew what they did to her to cause it?

 

I don't have Netflix, so not sure I'll be able to watch it.

Some moms and I were just talking about this show, since our kids are totally engrossed with it. What I personally learned is that many high school/college kids (of families I know) are suffering in some way, i.e. many on anti-depressants. Also learned how it’s difficult/long wait to get apts with Psychiatrists – I live in NKY/Cinti area, so I can’t imagine how it must be for more rural areas. Makes me wonder how many kids (adults too) walking around without quick access to mental health help. I haven’t watched it (I plan to) but if it generates awareness it’s doing some good.

No. After each person listens to the tapes, they pass it on to the next person. Each tape is devoted to a different person or action. The story unfolds from the 12th person on the tapes.

I haven't watched yet. I have heard there is some concern over glorification of suicide. Teans are not always able to discern what is real from fantasy. Thoughts from those who have seen it?

That was a Facebook discussion with some on my Facebook feed a few weeks ago after several of their kids in middle school had this book as a reading assignment. Essentially the girl uses suicide to "get back" at her "tormentors" and, at least evidently in the book it kind of leads to the feeling that she had the "last laugh" so to speak and was successful in getting back at the ones she wanted to. Thus, in a way, "glorifying" and justifying her suicide. A LOT of mom's did not like the book, the movie I haven't heard discussed as much.

I know they say "glorify," but that is not the word I would use. Hannah uses suicide because she feels there is no other place to turn, a feeling most incur I would say that commit suicide. It takes all of the common teen societal pressures and shows how it may affect someone.

"Justify" might be a better word. See my post above.

Just got through binging this over this weekend. I hesitate to say I really enjoyed it because it was very, very dark at times, but it was incredible television. It was indeed very graphic, but as far as the argument that it glorifies suicide I can't see that at all. In my opinion it was quite the opposite. The scene where her parents find her lifeless body in the bathtub is absolutely heart wrenching. That scene alone completely shatters any notion of glorifying suicide to me.

The struggle is very real, psychiatric, therapy, and other mental health services are a big challenge, particularly psychiatry. I know a lot due to being in the field. I haven't watched yet but have read the book. All I can say is that if the show is remotely close to the book it will draw nerves and emotion out from many.
