2006 Darkhorses/Under Appreciated Teams

Featured Replies

If you just review the overall postings here on BGP...everyone mentions Russell, Mercer, Belfry, Sheldon Clark, Trigg and Owensboro Cath....rarely...despite Middlesboro's ranking are they mentioned as a favorite. So from that vantage point...I personally think they're under the radar...

It just seems that way because...there isn't nearly the number of "rah-rah"-type posts from the Jacket faithful compared to what was seen when they were good a few years ago.

Back then, there seemed to be something about Middlesboro brought up in every dang thread...

That may very well be the case. I'm not a Middlesboro fan so I hope no one thinks that I'm "talking them up". I know what I saw last year in the Belfry game..and they've got a lot of talent....especially, on the offensive side of the ball.

Side note: What's going on in P-burg? This junior and senior class dominated the entire region as 7th and 8th graders at Adams Middle. Obviously, alot of things can change....but I really thought that group of kids were going to be very, very special. Great size, speed and big numbers. Just curious.

I've gotta give Kudos to the one's who said Caldwell Co as a darkhorse, after there impressive shutout of Trigg Co...A big win over Ft Campbell this week and I'd have to call them a favorite....

Question: What does, "4A doesn't have the greatest state reputation" mean exactly? I am new and live up here and would like to hear from other areas. When you live in the area you have a slanted view from those around you...let me know what others think! Thanks!

NKY 4A has not been that good in the grand scheme of things in the last few years.

Admittedly that mostly has to do with the fact that they had to go through Trinity to get anywhere in the playoffs and only Dixie in 2004 has managed to accomplish that feat.

There have been years as well in which the 4 teams from Trinity's district have swept NKY 4A. The most notable example of this was in 2003 when Conner was undefeated and lost to 5-5 Shelby County at home in round 1, a team that in many people's minds should not have been the #4 seed from our district.

I wouldn't count out Boyle Co. yet, they may be only 1-4, but a dangerous 1-4. They could be the best 1-4 team in the state.

I agree that Boyle may fly under the radar with their 1-4 record. I think the

Rebels will make some noise come playoff time.

I must also agree that Lincoln is my other pick to be a darkhorse in 4A. They have been pretty impressive of late.

I know they beat a pretty decent Fairview team last week...Who else have they played and what type team are they..A running team, passing team, little of both, or what..Whats there strengths and weaknesses??

Bath is 4-1 with wins over West Carter, Morgan, Lewis and Fairview and the loss to LCA. Their running game has been the key to those victories.

Actually, they're getting better each game. I'd go so far as to say they're 20 - 25 pts. better now than in the season opener.

Bottom line... The bulk of the team is still transitioning from JV to varsity ball (there's a LOT of first year varsity players on the field, especially in the trenches).

They keep up the improvement, P-burg could be pretty good come playoff time.

:bunny:

I wil have to include Bath County in Class A. They are vastly improved from last season and could be a team that gives others some problems in the palyoffs.

 You can't be serious.

Harlan Green Dragons. 5-1 (3-0). Best start to a season in a while. Also Somerset, with an 0-4, many people wrote them off, but they have the talent to sweep the district as well.

In class 2A I would say that the darkhorse is Breathitt County. This young bobcat team has already made a statement with the beating of Harlan County at Harlan. People are now noticing these young bobcats, they only have 4 seniors but the 4 they have are some great athletes. Becham Herald is one of the mountains best running backs and Casey Allen is one of the best o-linemen. The Bobcats have a couple good games left, one is aginst Leslie at Leslie and another aginst Middleboro at home. But i give the edge to Breathitt in both games. Watch out of the young bobcats, they will be causing some problumes for someone if they overlook the bobcats.

Breathitt Is a big sleeper....

We(western) played them in their honey bowl game and they had some good players. Even though we beat them they had a couple moments when they were tough. They should make an impact on this season playoffs.

Breathitt might very well be a darkhorse, but that wasn't Harlan County you beat. It was Harlan ... a decent Class A team, but one that isn't even in the top 10 in some ratings.

Just providing the numbers to back you up:

Since 1999, when the northern Kentucky teams began playing Louisville-area teams in the postseason, the NKY teams are 10-19 overall in such games. Taking Trinity out of the equation, their record is a more respectable 9-9 ... except that the NKY team is the higher seed and playing at home in most of those games.

NKY was swept in the first round 2001 and 2003 ... only in the latter year, when Seneca and Ballard were also consensus top-10 teams, was District 5 all that strong. In most years, District 5 is usually not as strong as the other district in town.
