Reds are trying to find out what they have, they will never know if Phillips is out there another year. This is about the 2020 rebuild.

He could go out and win the MVP award in Atlanta and this would still have been a good deal for the Reds.

Well, I don't know if I would go that far. If he were going to be that productive, the Reds would be better off to keep him and trade him in mid-season. Someone would at least pick up more of the salary in that case.

 

As to comments above by others about whether other teams had interest in Phillips, I doubt the Reds even talked to that many other teams considering Phillips has a full no trade clause and Atlanta is one of the few cities he would consider going to.

He's already played in AA and AAA, he's coming sooner rather than later.

Phillips will only be in Atlanta this year. His no trade clause is limited now, so if the Braves are out and he's playing decent they can move him at the deadline.

Let's see how his replacement does? Then we will know.
