I would love to see it lessened but not at the cost of my core beliefs.

 

Let's talk a hot button issue. I do not believe that abortion should be illegal. I do believe that it should be rare and highly regulated with all alternatives presented to the woman and a cooling off period after being presented with the information, including a fetal ultrasound. I an adamantly opposed to minors being able to have an abortion on demand without consent and I refuse to endorse funding for Planned Parenthood as long as they provide abortions and refuse to report underage girls who seek abortion to law enforcement as victims of statutory rape. Because of that there are people on the left that would call me a woman hater who wants to enslave a woman's vagina.

 

Both sides have dug in their heels. When Obama was elected how many times did he say elections have consequences? He ran as a unifier but what did he actually do to try to unify people?

 

I very much appreciate the well thought out response. In many ways, my stance on abortion is the same.

 

Take another hot button topic. Gun control. If we simply lump people into two camps, since I am a "lefty" to most, they think that they know where I stand. They would be wrong. I'm very pro responsible gun ownership. I don't believe that the mentally ill should have guns (meaning a certain level of illness, not simply anyone who is depressed, etc) and I BIG TIME think that we need more mental health

reform. As a teacher, I am also not against training and monitoring certain adults in a school building to be armed to protect kids. On the other hand, I think that those leave guns where children have easy access to them should be held criminally negligent.

 

Both of our examples illustrate an excellent point. We have got to stop lumping people into a couple of main groups and stop the dialogue at that point, which ends up resorting to shouting at each other. Nothing changes and the divide continues.

We have ALL (including myself) have been at fault at some point or another during the whole process. Some were purposely trying to cause issues. There is a difference between getting caught up in things (happens to everyone) and purposely trying to cause problems.
