Seems topical.

Yes or no and your thoughts?

Logical?

Clearly the vote should be no.

The problem comes with the definition of mentally ill. One version of this I saw that was being offered would restrict many disabled people from being able to purchase or own a gun also.

With the proper guidelines as to what defines "Mentally ill" I would support this and I'm as Pro-Gun as anyone on this site.

No, but I don't know the line.

One thing that would disqualify ownership of a gun would be receiving any govt asst for mental disability.

You've quickly hit the essence of my question.

Is America better off with some losing their right because of a designation due to some in that group truly needing to be barred?

ABSOLUTELY not.

Same here @Jumper_Dad. You nailed it.

I actually don't own a hand gun....shot guns, rifles and muzzle loaders (black powder for those unaware)? 10-12.

But, hell no they shouldn't. It's personally effected my family (suicide). Had their been something (even a law to turn in his weapon he legally owned within x amount of days) to come up when it was determined he was bi-polar (and, on medications that all seem to have side effects of "suicidal thoughts")...who knows...he still might be here.

Short answer is No.

Rarely is the infringement of a law abiding citizens rights, Good for America.

No and anyone who votes yes is mentally ill.

I'm not for anyone losing their rights if they do not deserve to lose them. That is anti freedom.

Sounds to me like if you favor this then you would favor a Muslin immigrant ban.

No, but who defines mentally ill?

At quick glance I thought this poll was… should the mentally ill be president?? lol

Mentally ill is a challenge. Families generally can't get help with assessment of adult family members in distress. We know so little and do so little.

Define mentally ill?

Who gets to determine it?

Does a person who's diagnosed as ADHD as a kid get a red flag on his mental health record?

On the face of it I say no they shouldn't but just like with abortion it's not black and white. Should a mentally ill person be allowed to have an abortion or better yet should a mentally ill person be allowed to have a child?

That is the issue with this question...how do we determine what is mentally ill?

The right answer is that it depends , and the poll does not offer the correct answer as a choice. Obviously, a person suffering from psychosis should not be allowed to possess a gun. IMO, such people should not be allowed to have guns, even if their condition is treatable with medication. The risk is to great to society.

However, people with mild mental health issues that do not impact their judgment and do not make them any more violent than others without such issues, should not be deprived of their constitutional right to bear arms. Most people with mental health issues are no more likely to commit a crime with a gun than somebody with a broken leg.

Before reflexively responding yes to this poll, ask yourself how liberals could abuse a law depriving the "mentally ill" of their guns, because if they can abuse a gun control measure, then they will abuse it.
