The staff needs to be commended I know they have to branch out to other states but EKU should have been more of a player for some of the instate talent in the past. The previous staffs had just ignored the state.

Really like Alonzo Booth. Kid was a beast in high school.

A year ago, Mark Elder and his coaching staff had to scramble to put together their first-ever recruiting class at Eastern Kentucky University.

 

It really wasn’t an ideal situation.

 

“It was what I call ‘speed dating,’” Elder said. “We got together on Jan. 3 for the very first time as a staff and went out recruiting from there. We had just a month to sign guys. It was a very short process.”

 

This time around, things worked out much differently.

 

The coaching staff had the time to identify potential recruits much sooner and stayed on those targets vigorously throughout the process. That resulted in many early verbal commitments and ultimately a very deep and talented recruiting class.

 

On Wednesday, Elder announced the addition of 39 players (23 scholarship players and 12 walk-ons) to the EKU football program. The 2017 recruiting class also included four transfers, including three from FBS programs — quarterback Garrett Kruczek (Central Florida), along with running backs L.J. Smith (Louisville) and Jason Lewis (Arizona State).

 

“I feel really good about this class,” Elder said. “I feel really good that we brought in top-level talent. I feel really good that we brought in top-level young men as far as their character. We brought in a lot of guys who will not only contribute on Saturday afternoon, but also in the locker room and to the culture of the program.”

(Murray signed 3 kids from Ky. outside of western part of the state -- actually a pretty good increase for them--but again ZERO Louisville kids. Can't help but think they're missing out not making Louisville a priority.)

I'd love to see EKU making playoff runs again.

Before Coach Elder it had been YEARS since EKU had a recruiting presence in Louisville, not since the 80's, just crazy imo.

I love seeing our state colleges recruiting instate and signing them. Huge step for the state of Kentucky and our sport of football.

Our recruiting visit sucked they didn't do a very good job recruiting my son. He was looking forward to that visit. He was hoping to find a home there.

EKU will still be the third option for KY kids, requiring them to source talent from out of state. Glad to see that they are making an effort in KY.
