Covington Catholic 34 Beechwood 0

John Wehry, the CovCath JV QB threw the game winning TD pass in the JV game today vs. Beechwood. CovCath was losing 6-0 when the Colonels took possession on the 50 yard line after a big punt return by Pat Fagel with 40 seconds left. The two play drive was a 40 yard pass to Austin Schneider and a 10 yard TD to Jake Punch with 10 seconds left.

Clutch job by Johnny-boy "Elway" Wehry.

Clutch job by Johnny-boy "Elway" Wehry.

Very clutch. Especially considering he was coming off the bench for an injured Matt Young. Both his passes in the final series were right on the money. For the people that did show up it was an exceptionally exciting game for a JV game.

My point is that BW was down 24-0 with only one TO prior to the 4th down attempt at the goal line that was fumbled. Only one TD was affected by a TO in the first half. On the other hand, punting to Joe C cost Beechwood big time.

Why not punt the ball out of bounds and make CCH have a sustained drive?

I just watched the first half (again--this makes 37)--there were 2 turnovers that resulted in scores.

As far as the punts go--what I will say is this--Coach Rash knows what is up. Sometimes during the course of a game, plays are not executed perfectly. It is easy for most people to sit back and think that a coach never gave a certain direction to the team. For whatever reason--people assume (at times) that 15, 16, 17, 18 year old kids are always able to execute perfectly when directed by the coach.

Sometimes it doesn't work perfectly . . . . . . not because the kid doesn't try . . . . . but because it just doesn't work out perfectly.

(None of that is meant in a bad way--or in a negative fashion. I will say this--Coach Rash is more prepared for all games, especially this one, than any coach I have ever known).

I must be missing one TO that resulted in points. I only remember the fumble on the first play of the game. Which one am I forgetting?

Ah--for the record--Alter would shut them down defensively on a different level than what you are used to seeing. The final score would be something like 2-0 or 3-0 or 6-3. (Alter has a pretty good kicker as well).

The better team won tonight . . . . . . . . . .

And by the way--if you want a tape--send me a PM. Even the untrained eye could see the difference.

I'm willing to let this go, but you do concede that CovCath could at least play with Alter. That's more then you were willing to say two weeks ago.

I am a Beechwood fan, but I, and everyone around me thought that the field goal called "no good" was well inside the uprights. Since CCH did not argue and are not famous for suffering in silence, I decided the call must have been correct. How clear was the tv view?

Both teams need a case of stickum for their receivers. Dropped passes are a relative rarity for these two teams but there was a boat load of them last night.

Finally, are Joe C. and Flynn being recruited by anyone? These guys look like D-1 players to me. Perhaps not major-major, but either d-1 or high D-2. I would appreciate any info concerning their size and speed.

Earlier this year, I posted on a UK board that I liked Joe C, better than Englemon, primarily because Joe has an established position at db and has played that position for a long while. Naturarlly, the blue glass crowd disagreed...sight unseen.

I know for a fact Boston College, Louisville, Cincinnati, Tennessee and Kentucky are all showing interest in Joe....

Not Sure about Flynn

The big prospect is Peter Sutton.... Notre Dame has a tight end in the 07 recruiting class who might not qualify... it is widely believed that if he doesn't qualify, Peter could get the scholly. My Bet is that he ends up at UK

Kurt Bovard is recieve alot of interest from Eastern Kentucky

I said that one school up here could (maybe) beat Alter. (that is pretty close to the exact phrase!)

If the score is 2-0, 3-0 or 6-3--I would say that I "concede" that fact . . . . . .

You know--I thought that we were playing with them last week as well--but for them to score 16 points--is borderline blowout. It is a different type of philosophy than what I am used to (having a good enough defense to be patient with scoring). They scored 53 points the other night against McNick--I thought my eyes were failing me.

Just so everyone is upfront--CovCath is a VERY GOOD FOOTBALL TEAM. They were the better team on Friday night--and that is what matters.

The offer for the tape is still open--for the simple fact that I don't want you to think that I am trying to insult CovCath.

Good luck to the Colonels for the rest of the season.

NKYBBALL...Thanks for the info. I always like seeing N. Ky. players get their due reward. We were overlooked somewhat during the Claude Bassett years. I still don't see U. K. fulfilling their professed statement concerning recruiting Cincinnati just as though it were a part of Kentucky.
