Do we need Mexico as an ally?

Featured Replies

It may be over-simplistic, but I think you'd want anyone who you share a border to with to be an ally.

Yes. I want to go back to Cancun sometime in the future.

Yes. It's always bad news bears to be at odds with the country right next to you.

And any problems in Mexico will spill across the border, guaranteed. Doesn't matter how high you build that wall.

An ally? Yes.

I don't think we should send them near the amount of aide we do though.

Yes but that don't mean they can just let their citizens come across the border illegally and reap the rewards of free stuff.

This is China's North Korea problem.

But, Mexico is our third largest trading partner, second to China and Canada. I realize protectionism is now en vogue, but trade benefits the US economy.

There have always been criticisms of NAFTA (from the left, which now sounds odd), but I don't see how needless belligerence is going to improve it.

Yes to Mexico, but no to the drug Cartels. Not sure who makes the calls down there.

We should be trying to draw Mexico and all of Central America closer. It's less than ideal for them to find new partners in South America, especially among the countries governed by anti-US socialists like Bolivia or Venezuela or the illiberal Peronists in Argentina.

That ship has sailed with Trump, I'm afraid (e.g. TPP, NATO, EO on withdrawing from multilateral agreements).

Sails are fully raised too.

We've given them $2.4 Billion in aid over the last 7 years.

So relationship is great as long as it is an all take no give. Got it.
