Covington Catholic 70 Dayton Dunbar (OH) 68

Featured Replies

Final

Colonels hang in there to squeak past a very tough Dayton Dunbar team in the Flyin' to the Hoop Classic in Dayton, Oh.

Nice win for CCH - this was essentially a home game for Dunbar.

Dunbar is a perennial D-II power in Ohio - currently sit at #5 in the state. This type of win shows why CCH will be so tough to beat in a one-game regional/state tournament elimination format.

Nice Win for the Colonels without CJ !!!

Another stellar performance from AJ Mayer with 26 points and 10 boards to add to his 30 points the other night against NewCath.

54% from the field - 26/48

9/19 from 3

9/11 from the line

20 Turnovers

35 Rebounds to Dunbar's 20

AJ Mayer - 26 - 10 boards

Aiden Ruthsatz - 20

CVH - 14

Luke Lenihan 6

Jake Walter -2 - 11 boards

Nick Thelen - 2

I didn't expect them to win tonight.

How does Jake Walter only score 2 points? I am not trying to be negative because other kids have stepped up and I know CCH doesnt run their offense through any one player.

But if you are 7ft you would think you could get more looks, get to the line, etc. Just sayin.....

AJ is playin some ball. 6'2"/6'3" - plays bigger. Big, big win.

Wednesday should be a blast.

This is not a knock on the young man, but I've never seen him score with his back to the basket down low and I've seen the Colonels play 3 times this year.

Is it just me or am I crazy to think that if a kid was 7ft that he'd be somewhat of a factor on offense?

From the Dayton (OH) Daily News:

Dunbar falls at Flyin’

KETTERING - Dunbar missed a layup at the buzzer and dropped a 70-68 decision to Covington Catholic (Ky.) in the Day 3 finale of the Premier Health Flyin’ to the Hoop at Trent Arena. Dunbar senior Chris Jackson hit four 3-pointers and led the Wolverines (10-2) with 21 points. He was award the first Flyin’ scholarship, courtesy of River Valley Credit Union, at halftime.

A.J. Mayer led Cov Cath with 26 points. Jake Walter, the 7-foot junior son of former Bengals lineman Joe Walter had 11 rebounds and two blocks for the Colonels (16-4).

His presence on the court is a factor in and of itself, you don't necessarily need to score to be a factor.

Agreed, it sounded like he altered the final play of the game.

Of course.....A decent 7 footers presence will always be felt in a high school game especially if you have no one with decent size to match up with them.
