Covington Catholic 70 Dayton Dunbar (OH) 68

What a fun game to watch.

Dunbar runs with essentially 2 1s, 2 2s, and a 3. They ran 5 around the perimeter offensively early and took CCH off the dribble and got to the rim or kicked it to a shooter.

CCH adjusted and went to a zone and it slowed Dunbar down in the 2nd qtr. Add in 6/8 from 3 for CCH in the 2nd qtr and it was an even game.

CCH actually went up about 9 in the 4th but threw away possessions and missed some shots at the rim they usually/always make.

Exciting ending.

Both teams will point to the stat sheet and find a problem area. CCH will be TOs and Dunbar's will be FTs.

Two teams that battled HARD.

Let me respond to the questions/criticism of Jake Walter.

First, he was really strong in this game on the defensive end as well as passing. His 2nd half may be the best I've seen this year as far as effort and impact. The kid for Dunbar caught the ball under the basket with Jake just below the FT line and Jake got back to the rim to contest the shot and it was missed. If he doesn't hustle we're going OT.

Rebounded well. Outlets were good. Blocked and altered shots.

Offensively:

First they don't need him to score a lot.

Secondly, he's a weapon with his passing. Had some nice passes today that led to easy buckets.

He works HARD down low to get position. Sometimes they front him with help on the backside. A few times tonight CCH didn't take advantage of the player left open. Other times he's open but the pass isn't made for various reasons. Tonight the passes were hard to make because of the help D PLUS the pressure on the ball. Other times he's open but the passer hesitates to get the ball and the window closes.

He does have post moves. Has a really nice left hand. Foot work is getting better. Actually, foot work is the key to his success. As it gets better his offense will get better. Being tall doesn't mean it's easy to score.

Lastly, the improvement he's made physically this year should be applauded. His body has changed. He's moving very well. That will be even better with one more year of conditioning and summer AAU at a high level.

When you're the BIG kid in grade school and JR high you don't have to work on your game. You score because you're big. High school is different especially with the schedule CCH plays.

Jake is fine and an asset.

Let me add one more thing. I can't tell you how much joy I get out of watching a team play as hard as CCH does. Every team plays hard to an extent. CCH just plays harder than most. I give Scott credit for much of that.

Wednesday's game against Cooper , who is the other team that I think plays harder than everyone else, is going to be fun. Too bad neither team is fully healthy.

Nick Thelen - 2

Nick Thelen as well as defensive ace Casey Nowak gave the Colonels good minutes off the bench.

Awesome win Colonels.

Wednesday should be fun. Could be Round 1 - feeling out process, with the haymakers to be thrown down the road.

Funny how having so much quality depth inspires kids. CovCath has the luxury of sitting an underperforming player if he doesn't give it his all, and still not missing a beat. Kids have to feel that heat and know that anything less than 100% may not be recoverable. Great program

They're missing their best offensive player and just won this game and buzz sawed the Breds. Heck of a program.

Aiden Ruthsatz is shooting 18 of 30 in his last 5 games.
