ggclfan Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 We have talked about this to some extent in the thread regarding the US not vetoing the UN resolution regarding Israel last week. I thought this subject deserves its own thread. Simple question but with a complex answer...Is it worth it for the US to be a member of the UN the way the UN is currently constructed. Not only that, but the US funds 22% of the UN which has to be billions of dollars annually (not sure the exact amount). The UN does do some very good charitable work around the world but IMO is totally impotent in dealing with world security issues (atrocities going all over the world right now and what has the UN been able to do about it?).
Jumper_Dad Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 I feel the UN is just one step above FIFA when it comes to the amount of preening divas they have running around and living off of the spoils. Paying 22% is the 2nd biggest boondoggle in the history of Manhattan.
plantmanky Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 The UN is kinda like the lock on the front door of your house. All it does is keep the honest people honest.
LIPTON BASH Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 Since its inception 0 world wars. Very fair point. I just believe something needs to change. The UN has a history of underminding US allies or Democratic countries. Fifa is a fair comparison because there is a lot corruption. I think every once in awhile we need to threaten funding to keep the children in line.
jericho Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 Since its inception 0 world wars. But there have been some pretty major wars.
Clyde Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 I was shocked to read how much of the budget the US provides. Would not having the UN hurt Israel without the US being able to support them?
Hellcats Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 Permanent SC members should share funding percentage. Of course if we pay less money we have less influence. What are the expectations of the UN?
All Tell Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 Any organization the would put Quadifi's Libya on the human rights commission has no legitimacy as far as I'm concerned. At this point they are a waste of prime Manhatten real estate.
LIPTON BASH Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 I just read we pay 22% of UN regular budget but also 25% of the peace keeping budget. Time to start cutting the budget until the children get in line.
Jaysie Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 I have mixed feelings about this. At least we are talking. What would you replace it with?. UNICEF is good? or bad?. Resolutions are impotent. Rife with corruption. Nothing gets solved. We are the main source of funding.
StickerMann Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 Since its inception 0 world wars. Good point, but like many ideas (governmentally) which start with good intentions; this one is out of hand and totally become a bureaucratic nightmare.
ggclfan Posted December 28, 2016 Author Posted December 28, 2016 Good point, but like many ideas (governmentally) which start with good intentions; this one is out of hand and totally become a bureaucratic nightmare. I agree. I think the UN was started for very good reasons. However, it has become a cesspool of corruption that does nothing about many atrocities around the world but is obsessed with the only democracy in the ME. Some of the countries that are on the Security Council are so bad when it comes to human rights that it would be comical if it were not so sad. Russia, China, Venezuela??? Seriously?
lawildcat Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 The UN is a joke. UN resolution is one of dozens of rebukes against Israel in 2
