Six Classes Won't Kill KY Football....the Lack of Districts Games Will!

Featured Replies

Much has been made about the Six champions for such a small state and so few teams etc.

IMO the six champs won't kill KY football...........the lack of meaningful district games will.

Look around your area of the state as teams begin district play this week or next. Big games are all over the place. Win and make that statement for the playoffs, lose and face an uphill battle to get in. Big time atmosphere and game planning going on all this week.

Now look at next year. Zzzzz wonder if ESPN has a college game on Friday night. Zzzzzz maybe go see that third Pirates movie. Zzzzzz maybe go get something to eat. Heck everyone makes the playoffs and will catch the game next time when it really means something.

From a rural standpoint, I disagree. I think this allows schools the fliexibility to renew some rivalry games that were discontinued when the new alignment came into effect four years ago. Teams will look to schedule a border school as opposed to driving 55-70 miles for a mandated district game. Fewer district teams = more scheduling flexibility because many schools will have the same off weeks with the districts being close to the same size.

This will really benefit the smaller schools, giving them a better chance at making playoffs and letting the coaches schedule more of the games they would really like to play, be them more challenging or a guaranteed win.

:thumb: Agree.

This will also benefit schools in large and extremely weak districts.

Nothing can be done about it now, no use in cryin over it. The KHSAA won't listen to the people who really care about HS Football

I agree one positive would be that some schools will have more flexibility to schedule a neighbor school that is not in their class. In fact, I could forsee those games being more "important" than distirct games. That I do not think is good overall for the advancement of the sport of football in the state.

For example, if Team A gets rival Team B on the schedule and that becomes the big game while the district games take a back seat because they no longer matter as much as they do now, that might effect the quality of play overall.

Also I do not like the 10th and 11th weeks being slated for non-district games. I fear some bad games in those weeks when they used to be very good weeks as playoff spots were determined.

That's a bunch of garbage. I see that you are from Corbin, so I can only presume Corbin HS is who you support. Why did they not participate in the feedback process with the KHSAA? Look on KHSAA web site and you will see that Corbin didn't even share their opinion. They didn't even take the time to respond. They are the ones who didn't care enough to share concerns or that school was satisfied with the results. Those who didn't participate in the process should just shut the heck up. As should their fans, unless of course, those comments are directed to the school administration who failed to correspond with KHSAA. The ones that care about HS football participated in the process, became engaged in the discussion, and now move on to getting involved with scheduling.

That's why you schedule the big time schools like Elder, Xavier, Columbus DeSales, etc. to fill in for the off dates. Keep it competitive and your program will look at those games as being just as important as your District games. What better feeling than to knock off a bigger powerhouse. And when you don't, that feeling will hurt just as bad.

Some Districts will only pick up one more District game if not stay the same. Ky. football won't die off for the big programs because they have the right plan of scheduling. Anyway there are already Districts that have only 4 teams in them. That hasn't killed it.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!!!!

Ouch!

Which game is more important year in and year out? St. Xavier vs Trinity (rivalry) or that big St. X vs. Iroquois district game? Danville vs. Boyle (rivalry) or Danville vs. Trimble County (district). I think it's safe to say that there will still be MANY important non-district games.

I've seen too many teams travel to a district game with a fan contingent of 20-30 people. I remember one year where Fulton City had more cheerleaders on the sidelines than fans in stands for a road game.

How would you like for your team to play a team in week 11 and then turn right around and play them in the first round of the playoffs? That is what the new system is trying to eliminate since they have made the first two rounds of the playoffs intra-district games now.

What I don't like is next year in the Lexington 6A district there is only four teams. Dunbar, Henry Clay, Lafayette, and Tates Creek so no one will have to win a game to make the playoffs. Either we don't need 6 classes, the district needs to be re shuffled, or we need to change the playoff format to where only two teams from your district makes the playoffs. Not winning a district game and making the playoffs is a joke.

True...but wins will need to happen if the given school wants to play at home.

I agree with you (and disagree with Kissinger). The whole govermental special-interest red-tape bureaucracy thing is the stream in which the KHSAA is afloat. The best interests of the student-athlete are not driving the boat.
