From a buddy of mine who coaches college football...he said that doesn't pay anywhere else he goes to recruit players. Tennessee, Ohio, PA, etc. However in this state he does. He doesn't coach on a high level so I would bet he doesn't get paid that much to coach...if (the KHSAA or who ever is in control of this) is wanting to promote the commonwealth's talent then I would try to make it accomdating for college coaches (especially those who have low recruiting budgets). Just my thoughts.

So how should the KHSAA handle this? Do college coaches have passes? Should ticket takers assume since they have on gear from a particular school and say they are a coach, they really are?

It sounds like a logistical nightmare for the KHSAA to me. I'd be interested to see how other states do it.

College coaches who are recruiting and media should never have to pay to get into a high school sport. There were several coaches who were very upset about having to pay over the weekend.

Any college coach that complains about paying to get in a high school game is looking for a reason to be mad.

Very simple fix to this.

 

Every college has a S.I.D. or someone similar. The KHSAA should have a direct line that can be called to be put on an exempt list or to send out free passes. The S.I.D simply calls prior to the weekend and gets the necessary number of passes.

 

If they do not coordinate then coaches should pay like anyone.

I bet Mark Stoops wouldn't have had to pay.

Yes this is a non-issue for D-1 schools...but the majority of our players don't go D-1 they go to the lower level schools....which is great so I think we should be more willing to let those guys in for free so they can recruit our players. I guarantee if our coaches were to want to go to a game to watch a college team they would want a free pass (which they do) or even if one of our players were being recruited by one of the college schools and they wanted to go to a game they would want a free pass (which they do). It works both ways...so yes it is an issue in my eyes.

I know Jimmy Reed let the college coaches into the Kentucky HS coaches hospitality tent IF they could get by the KHSAA nazi at the stairs leading down there.

This is honestly 6 in one hand & a half dozen in the other.

 

The average Joe Tickettaker isn't going to know every college coach who comes to the ticket booth either. You would not believe the volume of "passes" or "official identification" cards I have seen over the years that people have tried to use to push their way through to see a high school game.

 

I never had a problem letting college coaches in if they were looking at one of my schools players as long as they would give me a heads up that they were coming. Even when visiting schools would call me & say that a college coach was coming to scout a game I would be totally fine with it.

 

In the end, any college coach is going to get reimbursed for travel, food, etc, that they resubmit back to the school, so its a push at best.

 

Maybe they need to check with other state associations to see how they go about doing this to streamline this issue if its such a problem.

I used to work at a DII school. I know the coaches there were reimbursed for tickets they had to buy when going to HS games and the school paid for tickets to the Sweet 16. Still a non-issue to me.

Yes but for a state who is trying to improve the recruitment of their football athletes it wouldn't make sense to promote and accept this practice. Just like Stoops or Petrino...they will never have to pay to get in a game...not because they can't afford it but who they are and what they can provide. Again just my thoughts.
