Region 3 Championship

What a game this was! Most expected this game to be a close one, potentially coming down to the final horn. However in the fourth quarter it looked as if North Bullitt was going to pull ahead as they led by 14 midway through the final stanza. A Dragon’s touchdown at the 5:15 mark pulled them to within a touchdown and momentum began to shift in their favor after another quick touchdown tied the game with a few minutes left to play. After a failed fourth down conversion by North Bullitt, the Dragons got the ball back due to the turnover on downs with a couple of minutes left to play. The Dragons worked their way down to the 1 yard line and kicked the game winning field goal with 4 seconds remaining. This one was a classic come from behind playoff win. Congrats to the Dragon’s for accumulating the most wins in school history and earning your second State Semifinals appearance.

Region 4 Championship

Some things always seem to stay the same. Southwestern has been playing great ball the latter half of the season and it was looking like this was their year to dethrone cross county rival Pulaski County. But alas, the Maroons are are the champs once again. This one was just a three point game early in the fourth quarter, however Pulaski County outscored the Warriors 14-3 in the final minutes of the game, sealing the deal. Pulaski County’s balanced attack and big play ability managed nearly 400 yards of total offense against a really good defensive squad. That was the difference in this one, some will say that there is a mental aspect that had an effect in this game, but that’s not the case. Pulaski County just has some big time play maker’s that will score in a pinch if they get loose.

This Week’s Games

Finally we are here and then there were four. I can’t really say finally as I wish football season played on throughout the winter, but you get the point. In the preseason poll, BGP pollsters had Bowling Green and Fern Creek ranked first and second. While Pulaski County and South Oldham came in at seventh and eighth.

Preseason #7 Pulaski County and #8 South Oldham go at it in Somerset. South Oldham at Pulaski County is an intriguing game. Two teams that I really didn’t expect to be in this position at this point in the season, but they have proven myself and some others wrong. Expect this one to be another nail biter with a potential come from behind win, much like last week’s game between South Oldham and North Bullitt.

As @ColonelMike said, If you believe in "karma", you might pick the Maroons; Pulaski has never lost a playoff game at home.

If you believe in "destiny", you pick the Dragons; South won its first 9 games (first time in school history), has won 5 straight district titles, and its 12-1 record is the best in school history. And after last week's 17 point rally in the final 5:15....

Destiny or Karma? LOL!

South Oldham is the #2 scoring team in 5A scoring 42 points per game while giving up 21 points per game.

On the ground South Oldham is led by Keaton Martin with 1,358 yards rushing and 18 rushing TDs on the year. QB Drew Zaubi has added 9 rushing TDs and Peyden George has rushed for over 500 yards this season. In the air, QB Zaubi has passed for nearly 2,100 yards and 28 TDs. Hauling those passes in Keanan John (778 yards 8TDs) and watch for George Payden, he catches about one pass per game but has taken 5 of 12 receptions to the endzone.

On Defense Baetens, Mitchell, Moore, Weathers and Downing all check in with over 70 total tackles on the year.

Pulaski County is scoring 33 points per game while giving up 23 points per game.

Running the ball Pulaski leans on a committee of runners as no runner has 500 yards rushing this season, but 8 have between 100 and 450 yards in rushing.

Passing the ball Pulaski got their starting QB back late in the season. Cain in 8 games has been able to pass for 19 TDs versus just 3 picks.

Jake Johnson is THE weapon Pulaski looks to exploit in every game. The state record holder in TD Receptions and many other records is maybe the best player in the state. On the season Johnson has rushed for 2 TDs, passed for 1 TD, caught 14 TDs, returned an INT for a TD and a couple of Special Teams TD's as well for 20 TD's on the season.

On defense Pulaski is led by Rickey Maxey their all time leader in tackles, he has a good stable around him with New, Morgan, Mobley and Hargis all of whom have over 100 total tackles on the season.
