  1. Who: North Oldham vs Franklin County What: Class 4A playoffs Round 2 When: Friday 11/10/23 7:30 pm ET Where: Franklin County HS, Frankfort, KY Broadcast: FREE, live HD video coverage starts at 7 pm ET on www.pegasussportsky.com Mike Montgomery and Mark Neu (former Morehead State lineman and former coach at Louisville Holy Cross) have the call. Tough challenge for a rebuilt North Oldham program under first year coach Brock Roberts that has really surged this year behind a prolific passing game and 3-year starting QB - and district player of the year - Jace Bullock. Bullock has thrown for 2,445 yards, 27 touchdowns, and only 8 picks. The Mustangs have featured the second-best passing attack in 4A this season, but have struggled at times to run the ball - though they ran all over Jeffersontown last week in round one of the playoffs. Roberts earned Coach of the Year award in District 4 and has built on the momentum started by Jamie Brown the last two years. Watch for Gray Schmittel - a first team all district on offense at WR and on defense - and Gradey Anthony (first team all-district on the OL and honorable mention all-district on the DL). Franklin County has rolled through everyone this year pretty easily, with a stout defense allowing less than 10 points per game and a high -flying offense. Ranked in the top 10 of Class 4A, FC will be heavily favored in this game. The regular season matchup went to FC easily....though North Oldham was one of only four teams to score in double digits against the Flyers (13 points), they watched as FCHS rang up its highest point total of the season in a 60-13 Franklin rout. QB Duri Trahan completed 8 of 11 passes for FC for 200 yards and - amazingly - five of the eight completions went for TDs. On defense, Jon Griffin prowled in North's backfield all game, registering 8 total tackles, including 4.5 TFL and 3 sacks. North Oldham netted just 12 total rushing yards in the game, though Bullock did complete 21 of 38 passes for 183 yards and a TD. Unfortunately for the Mustangs, Bullock threw 2 picks, a rarity for him. Gray Schmittel had 10 catches for 95 yards and a TD in the previous meeting. He leads North with 85 catches, 910 yards and 11 TDs receiving.
  2. "Best" excuse I ever heard - not from a coach but from a player - occurred 25 years ago after a team, on the road, lost. The quarterback told the coach that his poor passing night was due to the fact he "couldn't see over the crown on the field". 😅🤣😂
  3. Yeah, but that one is a pretty legitimate excuse in baseball, particularly high school baseball. I wouldn't necessarily say it's a lame/hilarious/silly/unfounded excuse....
  4. As a coach, I've been known to say that - privately - after the game among my coaches...it's a rotten feeling to know that this may, in fact, be true...........but I would flat-out be EMBARRASSED to say that out in public. Frankly, that's usually an admission that the "better team's" coaches didn't have their team prepared. You may have the better team - but the only thing that counts is what happens on the field. More sportsmanlike thing to say would be "Congrats to the (other team) for playing the better game tonight."
  5. CORRECTION: Kickoff for this game is at 7 pm. Free, live HD video coverage on Pegasus Sports (www.pegasussportsky.com) starts at 6:30 pm.
  6. Hard to know what to expect from this 9-1 Jtown team.....their nine victories have come over teams that have combined for just 20 wins. Only Louisville Holy Cross (5-5) won more than 3 games this year......of course, all this means is that we truly have no idea how Jtown will perform against a team with a winning record. It doesn't tell us whether they are truly good, or secretly bad. Friday will tell a lot. North has a reasonably stout defense, and their passing game is exceptional, with a lot of weapons. I don't expect the Mustangs to have much success on the ground - and in fact, they may not even try too hard to run the ball. North averages just over 60 yards a game on the ground. In last week's 29-7 win over Oldham County, North didn't hardly run the ball at all until the final drive, when they milked the clock with repeated running plays. But through the air, North has had one of the top passing games in the state. North QB Jace Bullock - a 3 year starter - has thrown for over 2,200 yards with 24 TDs and only 6 picks. Three different receivers have 30+ catches, with Gray Schmittel fielding 75 passes for 799 yards and 9 scores. Jtown is getting a lot out of their passing game as well....Raymond Cornish has thrown for 1,626 yards with 21 TDs and only 4 INT. More impressively, he's averaging just over 21 yards a completion. Kaden Ruff has 1,117 yards rushing with 14 scores. Pregame show starts at 7 pm ET on www.pegasussportsky.com FREE live HD video.
  7. Who: North Oldham Mustangs (6-4) vs. Jeffersontown Chargers (9-1) What: Class 4A Playoffs, Round 1 Where: Jeffersontown HS When: Friday 11/3/23, kickoff 7:30 pm ET Broadcast: Free live HD video coverage starts at 7 pm ET on www.pegasussportsky.com The North Oldham Mustangs (3 seed) travel to Jeffersontown, KY to tangle with the Chargers (2 seed) in round 1 of the Class 4A playoffs. The two teams have one common opponent.....DeSales....North defeated the Colts by 5; the Chargers lost to DeSales by 3. CM
  8. Who: North Oldham (5-4) at Oldham County (3-6) When: Friday, 10/27/23 kickoff 7:30 pm ET Where: Bell Field at Kris Landers Stadium, Oldham County HS, Buckner, KY Broadcast: FREE live HD video coverage starts at 7 pm ET on www.pegasussportsky.com The North Oldham Mustangs and the Oldham County Colonels square off for just the 11th time on Friday at newly-refurbished Bell Field in Buckner, with the all-time series currently tied at 5 wins apiece. (Oldham County has won the last five meetings). Both teams have made great strides this year under first year coaches, despite very young rosters. BROCK ROBERTS has already equaled the Mustangs' victory total of five wins last year, and this year, though the Mustangs will go into the Class 4A playoffs round one on the road, they will almost certainly enter the postseason first round as the favorites over Jeffersontown. (the two teams each played DeSales, with North beating the Colts and Jtown losing to DeSales). Mustang fans are excited that their team has a strong chance of recording its first playoff win since the 2014 team went all the way to the Class 4A semi-finals. Meanwhile, Oldham County - which last year suffered through its first winless season since 1979 - is showing signs of life under first year head coach SEAN LITTLE. The Colonels have only 3 wins on the season, but that's a nice jump up from last year's painful 0-11 campaign. The Colonels are bound for a really tough Class 6A playoff matchup with St. X on the road, but a win over cross-county rival North Oldham would extend Oldham's winning streak in the series to six, and guarantee them at least a 4-game improvement over last season. The matchups will be interesting..... North's three-year starting QB, senior Jace Bullock, has been brilliant at times throwing the ball, passing for 1,798 yards on the season with 21 TDs and only 5 picks, while completing 60.4% of his passes. Noah Leber, Dawson Nagle, and Kyle Mack have all been solid receivers - often coming out of the backfield - but it's been Gray Schmittel that has really starred, snagging 62 passes for 703 yards and 8 TDs - in just 6 games. Schmittel averages 117 yards receiving per contest. Sophomore Lucas Tompkins provided the Mustangs with a solid deep threat, but a broken collarbone has ended his season. North has relied on the passing game a lot; the running game is averaging less than 60 yards a contest. Oldham will counter with the power running of Caden Sheppard, who has 825 yards rushing and 8 TDs, and averages over 103 yards a game. Defensively, the chess game will match two talented junior secondary players for Oldham County - Miller Brown and David Turner - against Bullock and the Mustang passing attack. Brown (4 INT) and Turner (3 INT, 1 TD) have preyed on opposing passers all year, and both have the speed to turn a simple pick into a defensive score. Broadcast time is 7 pm ET on www.pegasussportsky.com, the only option streaming in 1080p.... CM
  9. Story of the game was simply the inability of Oldham's O-line to keep Ballard's speedy D-line off the Oldham QBs. We had Ballard with (unofficially) six sacks on the night, but they had countless hurries and hits on the Colonels' sophomore QB Derek Dees and his backup Kingston Dugan. If it weren't for the fact that both QBs are pretty mobile, there would have been a lot more sacks....as it was, they were running for their lives all night. Ballard's own sophomore QB - Larry Irvin - was very good at finding holes in the Oldham zone defense, and WR Maurice Stephens had a huge night, with 4 TDs. Oldham's running game, which has been their strength behind big 250+ pound fullback Caden Sheppard, mustered just 3 yards on 41 carries (unofficially). Of course, that was tinted a bit by the six sacks, but even taking the sacks off, OC had 35 carries for less than 50 yards rushing. Ballard will be favored in their final district game - against Eastern - next week and should have a first round playoff home game. Oldham finishes district play on the road at Trinity next week. Oldham County - a team dominated by sophomores - had some bright moments, but speed kills, and Ballard had a lot more of it.
  10. Having seen both teams in back to back weeks versus the same opponent, I had a really good opportunity to compare the two squads. Scott County is just a much better team than Woodford this year. Not a knock on the Jackets at all - just a tremendous compliment to the Cardinals. The most fundamental team I've seen this fall. Expected at least a 4 score margin and that's what we got.
  11. Visitation at Westport Road Baptist Church in Louisville today from 2-6 pm with services following.
  12. Who: Ballard at Oldham County When: Friday, October 13th Kickoff 7:30 pm ET Where: Bell Field at Kris Landers Stadium, Buckner, KY, on the campus of Oldham County HS Broadcast: FREE live 1080p HD video coverage begins at 7 pm ET on www.pegasussportsky.com Big Class 6A, District 5 matchup in Buckner on Friday... ....Ballard lost last week to Trinity and is 0-1 in District play. But the Bruins will be favored this week and next (against Eastern)....wins in both games would give them second place in the district and a first round home playoff game. ....Oldham County beat Eastern handily last week and is 1-0 in district play. A win this week at home against Ballard would give the Colonels two district wins and guarantee Oldham a first round home playoff game, regardless of their final district seeding game against district favorite Trinity. ...Oldham County started the century with back-to-back wins over Ballard in 2000 and 2001 - but the Bruins have won 10 straight in the series, including a 36-7 win in the last meeting between the two schools in August of 2016... During the current Ballard winning streak, the Bruins have never failed to score 21+ points; Oldham has only reached 21 points once, in a 49-21 loss in 2014. Pegasus Sports will go on air at 7 pm ET with full coverage of the game in (FREE) live HD video. www.pegasussportsky.com
  13. Having seen both teams, I'm picking Scott County by multiple scores.
  14. I have limited details, but I was informed tonight that former South Oldham girls / Ballard girls coach Frank Wright passed away this afternoon. It apparently occurred very suddenly, and my understanding is that Frank had passed before the ambulance could get him to the hospital. For all who knew him, you know that the state of Kentucky has had few coaches with the combination of basketball coaching acumen, integrity, and morals that Frank had. Everyone respected his teams on the court, and he was a friend whose loyalty you could count on. I don't have all the details in front of me at the moment - and honestly, I'm a little too upset right now to bother looking them up - but having broadcast the SOHS ladies during Frank's tenure in Crestwood, I can tell you that he was the most successful coach in South Oldham girls' history, though the region 8 title somehow eluded him despite some incredible teams. Please keep Frank and his family in your prayers. CM
  15. Who: #11 ranked South Oldham (5-2) vs. #4 ranked Scott County (6-1) Where: South Oldham HS, Crestwood, KY Mitchell Irvin Stadium When: Friday, 10/6/23 kickoff 7:30 pm ET Broadcast: FREE live HD video coverage in 1080p starts at 7 pm on www.pegasussportsky.com South Oldham's brief trip to the Class 5A top 10 was interrupted by a 30-14 loss to #5 Woodford County on the road last week. The Dragons, who saw a 5-game winning streak end, will try to regroup at home against a perhaps even more talented foe as South entertains #4 ranked Scott County. South is 1-1 in district play. Scott County is riding a 3-game winning streak, and sits at 2-0 in a loaded district. Head coach Jim McKee is a familiar face in Oldham County; he coached the Colonels of Oldham County in the 90s. This will be the first matchup between these two schools this century, and both will feature powerful running games that often may look very similar on the field. South will operate out of the flexbone, with QB Nick Hamilton, wingback/slotback Jacob Acevedo, and fullback Cole Greenwell leading an attack that averages over 250 yards per game on the ground. Scott County has been even more prolific on the ground, averaging over 300 yards rushing per game, with Jacob Fryman, Ellis Huguely, and Thomas Feickert all coming into the game with between 350-550 yards rushing. Both schools have had some success through the air, but neither is likely to spend much time on an aerial assault; South attempts less than 10 passes a game, and Scott averages just 7 pass attempts per game. Pegasus Sports high definition video coverage starts at 7 pm ET at www.pegasussportsky.com. Mike Montgomery and Mark Neu have the call from Crestwood. CM
