NCAA Forcing Thomas More to vacate undefeated national championship season (Women's)

Featured Replies

It matters because it doesn't make sense to go a very expensive Division III school when she could have gone to almost any other school in America for free. From and NCAA perspective, there are some red flags here IMO

She was released by FLA to attend any of the other BCS schools except UK. Wasn't there a sub-plot to all this when she was here about her relationship with another coach or am I just making that up ?

Rather harsh statement. First of all it was only the first title, secondly it was a failure to know the rules rather than knowingly "cheating".

The bottom line is TMC cheated and it revolved around their superstar.

I don't think it was harsh at all.

Imagine a major D1 school doing it with the best player in the nation. That's what happened here.

It was$5000 not $1600

Secondly, word is coming out that her father is the anonymous source that reported it to the NCAA.

I guarantee there is more to this story.

Guess it's safe to say that relationship is strained?

It always seemed a little odd to me that a player of her caliber ended up at a D3 school. I always thought the reason was that she wanted to be around her family. I guess not.

I'm a rules guy. Sucks for the school but follow the rules.

I wonder what made the NCAA re investigate this after they determinded it was a non issue initially.

The NCAA has never been kind to Sydney Moss.

The 2012 Miss Basketball from Boone County High School and daughter of former NFL wide receiver Randy Moss, Sydney signed to play with the University of Florida out of high school. After a year in Gainesville, Moss grew homesick. She wished to transfer to the University of Kentucky, but Florida’s coach blocked the transfer. Moss’ next best option was Thomas More College, only a few miles from where she grew up in Northern Kentucky.

Moss would have been a superstar at UK. Instead, NCAA rules allow for coaches to restrict where student-athletes can transfer. She could not attain the same level of fame at Thomas More, but she could still ball better than anyone else.

Moss broke school and Division-III records. Her 63-point performance in March of 2014 is a D-III record that will stand for many years. Unfortunately, her season ended too soon. Moss tore her ACL in the regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament, Thomas More’s only loss during her first two seasons on the team. Following her sophomore season, Moss was named D-III player of the year, an award she would win three years in a row.

Insert stupid NCAA rule number two.

While rehabilitating her injured knee, Moss stayed with a former Thomas More volunteer assistant coach, someone who coached her throughout her childhood. She was provided a free place to stay, meals and sometimes the use of an automobile. This arrangement lasted for eight months.

Once Moss returned to the court, Thomas More continued to roll. Moss averaged 25 points per game and the Saints never lost, finishing the 2015 season as undefeated champs. Now, it will all be taken away.

The NCAA notified Thomas More today that the institution, “failed to monitor largely because it failed to educate, identify and react to the impermissible arrangement.” Thomas More will receive two years of probation, a $2,500 penalty, an outside audit, required attendance at rules seminars and a vacation of all games in which the student-athlete participated in while ineligible.

To set the record straight: when Moss needed a place to stay while rehabbing an ACL tear, she turned to someone who coached her as a child. Because that person was once a volunteer coach Thomas More, she was ruled ineligible. An undefeated National Title will be vacated.

Meanwhile at North Carolina, institutional academic fraud for student-athletes took place for decades, likely during years the Tar Heels won National Titles. At Louisville, hookers were paid to put on sex shows in the basketball dormitory to recruit players to play for a National Championship team. Will their titles be taken away? No, because the NCAA is inconsistent. This is just one more sad example of hypocrisy.

Not once, but twice Sydney Moss has suffered because of the NCAA. She deserves better

Thanks for the whole story. She couldn't rehab in the dorm because if anyone has had this injury they know you don't do it on your own. TMC should have checked it out, but let's not put them in the "cheaters" catagory . That's reserved for all the big schools that KNOWINGLY and FLAGRANTLY violate much more serious rules. Did this affect in any way their winning titles? NO. She was already enrolled so it didn't affect her coming to TMC. Believe me if it were any of 100 other schools the NCAA would have said repay the $1600 and pay a fine and we will forget. But of course they aren't one of the CHOSEN schools like North Carolina, Louisville, and many more DARLINGS od the NCAA. Ridiculous.

She was tired of basketball being her entire life and spending endless hours practicing. She wanted to enjoy college life's other facets. She knew at TMC this was possible. This is from a very reliable source.

Not everyone LIVES to play sports at a big time school. "Red Flags"? What could TMC have offered her to come there except an excellent education and great enviornment.

That would be just like him to do that. She wants nothing to do with the bum so he tries to get back at her. Thanks dad.

Unfortunate that the relationship is not there. Thank goodness she had WVFrank in her life.

They could have offered her a lifetime of debt.

If she weren't a superstar would it have made a difference? Obviously you are entitled to your opinion but in the scheme of college violations this is so far down the list you couldn't find it. TMC was remiss in not checking it out, but knowingly cheating, I think not.

And what I meant by red flags was this...a high major player ends up a division 3 school, it is going to trigger someone at the NCAA to check into it. In their view I'm sure it seems odd.
