just 4 fun Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 I saw where the other thread got locked for some reason. so, let's open it up here..What's everyone's thought on this game? IMO, it'll come down to Mayfields line being able to contain the bigger and deeper Graves line. The Eagles play smash mouth football and I feel they will be able to put up some points against the Cards, but, I think Mayfield's speed and ability to mix the pass and run, will also put some points up. Should be a very good game, especially being a crosstown rivalry and high intensity. I like Mayfield to win in a pretty close game...31 to 21....
westsider Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 I'll be shocked if Mayfield puts up 31 points. I'll be a little surprised if Graves scores 21. In the years that the two teams are relatively even, the game is traditionally low-scoring.
snakesnot_2000 Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 I've seen both teams play. Graves has a decent team but didn't show me much offensively. If Mayfield can force Graves to throw the ball, I like Mayfield by 2 or 3 td's. Mayfield has more of an ability to mix it up with passing and running. Mayfield's kicking game is better also. Graves will play tough, so Mayfield needs to take control early to keep Graves from getting confident.
GoBigRed Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 Yeah, I think this Mayfield Defense is going to give Graves fits only because Graves won't have quite the talented running back that Mayfield has seen in back to back games, . I think Mayfield is going to force Graves to go to the air more than they want to which could cause some turnovers that Mayfield will capatalize on. Graves will be starting on the 20 cause McNutt is putting a high % of his kicks in the endzone so Graves will be fighting all night to move the ball down the field. I think Mayfields speed = points and if the running game isn't working, the passing game is still there. I don't know if I would go that high of a scoring game, more like 28-14 Mayfield.
just 4 fun Posted September 6, 2006 Author Posted September 6, 2006 Graves defense is always there strong suit and they could very well hold the Cards in check...Mayfield will have to do a better job tackling than they did last week..In most years the Cards can contain 1 back, but they did a poor job tacking E.Taylor from Hoptown last week and there QB was very elusive and gave em fits also..Graves has more options on offense than the Tigers did , but, none quite as good as Taylor and the Eagles are primarily a running team with little threat from the air..There big O-line will allow the Eagles to score some points, but, I like the offensive firepower the Cards will throw at them and I still feel like it will be a pretty high scoring affair...
BadaBing Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 This one is a toughy. Mayfield is definitely getting their feet under themselves. Year in and year out, they always play one of the toughest schedules in Region 1, and they always seem to come out a much improved team. Graves, on the other hand, schedules weaker teams in the year and come playoff time they just don't seem battle tested. They did beat Tilghman, but Paducah seems un-Tilghman-like this year so I think that means little. Graves is bigger, but very one-dimensional in that they don't pass the ball. Mayfield can run and throw. If Mayfield holds the ball longer and stops the run, they will win (that statement is predicated on Mayfield scoring two or three times, which they should).
Hearsay Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 I'll take the Class A little guy here against the 4A, no offense to my old Nelson County friend Mike Rogers. When I was down there in Mayfield last year having some high quality barbeque at a place whose name has temporarily escaped me, the Mayfield faithful were really upset at Graves for their perception that Graves was responsible for the field situation at War Memorial. Shelton and the Birds 28-14.
GoBigRed Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 I just talked to Adam tonight and he told me that Landon Heath is just out with a messed up MCL and he would be out for a couple of games!! He won't be in this game unfortunately but he will be back for the playoffs it looks like, .
Toothpick Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Hearsay If I were to place a bet I on that BBQ I would have to guess Fancy Farm As for the game I think eveeryone needs to stop and take a look at the handicap Mayfield will face without Landon Heath. Heath is the Cards best and most experienced lineman and it hurts the Cards. I sure felt better about Mayfield's chances before finding out that Heath will be out. This may swing control of the lime of scrimmage to Graves and if they can do that they win the game. I think Mayfield will have to play a heck of a game but they still bet my vote 21-14.

cardinalsvoice Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 I agree that Graves County's defensive stats have looked very impressive this season especially holding Tilghman to that low of an offensive standpoint with David Jones at QB. It will be an interesting matchup this Friday. Will also be a good test for Mayfield's Defense without Landon Heath helping to plug up the middle to see if Mayfield's run defense still shuts down the middle running game. As the Cards have done a really good job of shutting down the plays up the middle it is the outside that they have a hard time shutting down and when teams spread the field...something Graves has not shown a tendency to be able to do very much. If Mayfield can get up on Graves early and make them have to abandon the running game to go to the air it could be a long night for Graves. as I am still not convinced that Sanderson can beat you with his arm especially seeing how the Eagles do not have the speed that Mayfield's DB's have in Murrell and Sherrill..but if they can take the early lead or keep it close heading into the 4th quarter it could be a ballgame. I will stick with my original score of 28-14 Mayfield...but should be fun with this city/county rivalry and we have seen some games go the way they should and some that have not. GO CARDS
WKYfootballguy Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 I think this will be a game of who comes out the least flat... Both teams are coming off huge wins! Both will be most likely over-amped up! I see this game being close as I think Mayfield's "D" will hold Graves running game in check. A game of ball control and field position. I also see Graves getting after Mayfield QB Shelton. Shelton will have to dump it off to his back and ends to be successful. Again, I see the kicking game as being the big difference and I'll take the Cards in a close one! That is great news about Heath, and letting Heathcott slide into that slot and play as the schedule weakens could help him mature into a great backup OL!
