Thoughts & Prayers

Featured Replies

Could someone please explain to me the difference between the two? What is it about a prayer that directs it to a higher power? Does the higher power not bother with thoughts unless they conclude with an "amen?"

I think our Lord, Yahweh, El Shaddai, Jehovah, Allah, etc., can figure that out.

I think their is a difference. We are commanded to "Ask" there are several times in the Bible where God's people received an answer after they specifically prayed.

In Philippians we are command to "through prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God"

We just talked about this in Sunday School recently so sorry I'm just now responding to your question. Last year was somewhat of a blur to me - my mom died in August so I received many condolences with people telling me I was in their thoughts and prayers. Both expressions meant alot to me but I think there is a difference between thoughts and prayers. Prayer is not simply a way of saying that you are supporting someone and showing them concern. Prayer is the act of interceding for a person or situation before God. The Bible says that because of Christ, we can go directly to God and ask him for what we need. I believe that God will respond when we pray, and give us power and peace that are not achievable simply with our own thoughts. As someone pointed out to me - Prayer activates God’s power. Thoughts activate our own power.

Thoughts are just that--you're on my mind.

Prayers are me asking God to act on your behalf.

Do you ever pray through deities or do you only go directly to the man?

Like what? Are you talking about Mary, saints, or something else?

Yes, I was once told I was not a Christian because Catholics pray to/thru someone other than God.

Tell them that God doesn't have time to help you find your lost car keys! That's why he delegates!

Mrs. TAC constantly prays to St. Anthony for lost items. I tell her to pray to some saint that prevents her from losing stuff to begin with. LOL

Directly to God.

@TAC and @lawildcat Along the line of saying the Hail Mary. My issue with praying to Mary is based on what I was taught the Hail Mary prayer was. From what I understand when someone prays the Hail Mary they are asking Mary to forgive them of their sins. Is that true? I honestly do not know for sure, but if that is true, then I think it would be non-biblical to do it.

Thoughts = I am thinking of you and this may lead me to do something for you, like provide a meal during a time of grief, etc., but know I am supportive of you and aware of your situation.

Prayers = me asking God to do for you what I can't do and only He can.
