October 22, 20178 yr @TAC and @lawildcat Along the line of saying the Hail Mary. My issue with praying to Mary is based on what I was taught the Hail Mary prayer was. From what I understand when someone prays the Hail Mary they are asking Mary to forgive them of their sins. Is that true? I honestly do not know for sure, but if that is true, then I think it would be non-biblical to do it. I'm not Catholic but have many friends & some family who are so this has come up. The way it was explained to me Catholics do not put Mary on par with God; they do a better job at recognizing the role she played in Christian history. Luke 1:28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. – KJV. Mary is certainly worthy of reverence, but not worship. The Hail Mary is not a prayer of worship, but it is a recitation of Scripture and then an asking of her to pray for us to God; much like asking other Christian brothers and sisters to pray for us.

October 22, 20178 yr @TAC Ok. I learned something. I've asked this before to Catholic friends and people that I know and they have never explained it like this before. Does the church still beleive that Mary never died but was assumed up to heaven like Enoch and Elijah?

October 23, 20178 yr Mary was assumed into heaven (not ascended like Christ). Whether she died or not is a matter of debate (but really doesn't change anything). Mary is "venerated" in the Catholic Church because of her role as the new "Ark of the Covenant" and her "Fiat" (saying "yes" at the Annunciation and giving her consent to the Incarnation). She is NOT viewed as a goddess nor she is she viewed as an equal to the Trinity. Mary and the saints are role models for us. By their lives, we can see examples that help us strive for personal holiness in our relationship with God. As has been mentioned, they also intercede for us before the throne of God (as would anybody here on earth who would pray for us if we ask). Sure we can pray to God directly at any time. But isn't it cool that we can go to Mom too? BTW, the parts of the Hail Mary are straight from the Gospel of Luke.
October 26, 20178 yr Thought--- Gosh, the Bengals sure do have a screwed up franchise. Prayer--- Plz, God, no more Marvin Lewis!
