Lexington Herald-Leader: 9/04/2006 Rating the State

Featured Replies

How is that so? On what do you judge that assessment?

Go back and review the 2003/2004/2005 Ratings and you'll find Trigg Co, Ft, Campbell, Owensboro Cath, E-town..all ranked higher than your eventual champions:

Belfry 2003/2004 and Russell in 2005.

That's just a 3 yr window. If you go back further..in 2002 you had two E. KY teams in Breathitt and Corbin in the championship..

2001: Prestonsburg(E.KY) vs. Bardstown (Central KY)

2000: Boyle(Central) vs. Glasgow.

I think it's very fair to say that E. KY has dominated the 2A landscape over the past several years...and still struggle to gain any respect in these crazy power ratings. It's makes no sense.

The only time east meets west is in the championship game. In 2003, Belfry beat Elizabethtown in overtime. Belfry beat Owensboro Catholic in 2004 in a game that wasn't decided until the final minutes. Russell was convincing in beating Owensboro Catholic last year.

Frankly, in my estimation, the best team in the west hasn't come out of the west very often in recent years. Owensboro Catholic had a big injury to their QB in 2002, then was upset by Elizabethtown in the semifinals in 2003. Last year, Fort Campbell led Owensboro Catholic in the regional finals before their Mr. Football winner and a Notre Dame signee went down with fourth-quarter injuries. Those aren't excuses, just informed observations.

I don't disagree that eastern Kentucky has been the better half of 2A in recent years, but to say it has "dominated" is a bit of a stretch, other than 2002.

In each of the last three seasons, I've done some research for theguru, comparing the BGP rankings with the other state football polls and power rankings.

Over the last three seasons, Cantrall has done as good a job as anyone in predicting the final four teams in each class. Basically, the two best "systems" have been the Cantrall ratings and the BGP rankings.

No one is saying that Cantrall's ratings are the gold standard for measuring teams, but his formula usually gives us a good barometer of where teams stand with those in other areas of the state. No system is perfect, but Cantrall does a decent job.

Thats a pretty fair observation. 2002 2A the top 3 teams were obviously in the east. Breathitt Co, Russelland Mason Co. That year those 3 teams were far above the rest of 2A. Any one of the would have rolled in the finals. As Breathitt Co went on to prove.

To each his own I guess. However, no matter how you cut it, slice it, or wrap it up in package...W. KY football at the 2A level has pulled an "O-fer" over the past several years. Don't take it as a flame....all I'm saying is that Eastern Ky Football teams don't get the proper respect in many of the power ratings....despite consistently winning several of the past championships.

Well i was a little suprised to see Johnson Central so high in both overall rankings at #19 and Class 3A rankings at #5. How does Cantrall go about coming up with his ranking system?

Danville at the peak of Class A. I must say that makes me proud lol :thumb:

...and with Boyle ranked number 9 in Class AAA, to only have one win, really says something about there program!

Good luck to both my teams!! And Mercer too (ranked 2nd)! Good luck to all:D

SK deserves better...... top 15 for sure.

I disagree. While they might be there eventually, you can't just hand them that this early. They haven't had a real test yet, but after they take on some NKY 4A and prove themselves then they can be up there.

While Bardstown has been very sharp the first three games, I'm not ready to commit to them being ranked higher than Mayfield or Holy Cross until they beat one of the two.

Bardstown's win over LaRue County looks better than it did two weeks ago, not to mention their shutout of the Nelson County team that beat Bullitt East. I'm not ready to proclaim the Tigers as the team they were last year, but the evidence we have so far indicate that this bunch is fairly good.

I agree with Heresay that Bardstown should not be ranked above Louisville Holy Cross. Thankfully, we only have to wait until 9/15 to have the head-to-head answer.

I see where Trigg County is pretty high up on Class 2 AA, but they are not even ranked in the AP poll, but did get honarable mention. Hmmmm, interesting.

North Bullitt behind Waggener in 3A. North beat Waggener Friday night to improve to 2-0?????

That doesn't make much sense.
