In Game 7, Twins pitcher Jack Morris got the win in a 10-inning complete game shutout. Braves starter John Smoltz did all he could and somehow eight innings of shutout baseball wasn't enough.

I believe today is also the anniversary of the memorable Game 6 of that series.

Honestly remember every game of that Series like it was yesterday.

Bill Mazeroski's walk-off homer in game 7 in 1960 as the Pirates beat the big, bad Yankees.

Tremendous Series.

It was a hell of a series. The one thing about it I'll always remember was the handshake between Lonnie Smith and Brian Harper at beginning of game 7.

The Reds-Red Sox in '75 was a great one too. I can still see Tony Perez waiting on that big high looping pitch from Luis Tiant to hit a homer in game 7. I think his smack tied the game and Joe Morgan's RBI hit in the late innings gave Cincinnati the lead for good and the championship.

 

Game 6 was crazy as well. That's the one that former Red Bernie Carbo hit a 3 run homer to tie the game and Carlton Fisk won it with his foul line homer.

What's crazy about that one is Pittsburgh won 4-3 but was out scored by like 25 runs in the series.

I wish I could have seen it but I have read about the '72 WS where the A's beat the Reds in 7. Game 6, where the Reds won 8-1 to knot it at 3-3, was the only game not decided by one run. Three 3-2 games, a 2-1 and a 1-0 as well as a 5-4 game. Lots of great players in that series, but Gene Tenace, of all people, was MVP, hitting 4 HRs. Reggie Jackson was injured. Grand total of 37 runs scored the entire series.

What is also crazy (if my memory is correct) is that the 7th game was an afternoon game during the middle of the week.

I remember after one of the games where Tenace had hit two home runs one of the 6:30 network news broadcast had a piece that said , "Today there was a Tenace match in the World Series."

It was a good one Jim. Reds pitching couldn't get Tenace out. And Joe Rudi killed them on some fine outfield snags. A few years later the Redlegs would trade Revering for Vida Blue but the trade was nixed by commisioner Bowie Kuhn for "not being in best interest of baseball."
