I think we all heard about how the Bengals tried to make Hue Jackson the coach in waiting, before he left to take the Browns. In a story posted on ESPN this week, apparently the plan was for Hue to take over as Head Coach in 2018.

So I guess the question now is does Marvin Lewis plan on 2017 being his last season still, if he doesn't get fired after this season if they don't make the playoffs? If Marvin was willing to step down as coach after 2017 for Hue to take over, you have to assume Marvin Lewis doesn't plan on coaching to much longer right?

Marvin Lewis wanted his previous offensive coordinator Hue Jackson to stay with the Cincinnati Bengals to eventually take over as head coach, Lewis said Wednesday.

"We had clearly spoke of an opportunity for Hue to stay here if he so liked" Lewis said on a conference call with the Cleveland media. "If that's what he chose to do, then eventually he would become the head coach."

Jackson instead chose to become head coach of the Cleveland Browns.

NFL.com first reported the succession story, saying Jackson and Lewis had presented the idea to Bengals owner Mike Brown. The plan had Jackson taking over as Bengals coach in 2018.

Jackson, according to NFL.com, felt the situation would have been awkward.

"That's Marvin's football team. Been there a long time," Jackson said Wednesday. "I think it's hard to ever replace a best friend that way and be there waiting behind. I didn't think it was the right thing for me to do. I didn't think it would be right their team.

"Obviously, I will always be in debt to the Bengals, but I think I'm where I'm supposed to be right now."

Lewis, however, said the plan would have worked.

"He and I are very close," Lewis said. "All he wants is to win football games. We both have the same goal, and that's what's important. It would not have been an issue."

Lewis' affection for Jackson is readily apparent.

"You love him like a brother that I never had," Lewis said. "I spent a lot of time with him. ... [When] we coached together, every time, [he] has always done such a great job. I think he brings out the best and challenges everybody to be the best."

Marvin Lewis wanted Hue Jackson to succeed him as head coach of Cincinnati Bengals

Do we have to wait until 2018 for Marvin to leave?

You have Bruce Coslet's phone number on speed dial? We're lucky to have Lewis and should be grateful that were on the uptick instead of the cellar.

A lot of sports fans are satisfied with mediocrity! Cincinnati is slowly becoming a laughing stock of the league AGAIN, with Burfict's antics and Pacman following his lead. Time to clean house of the riff raff and it starts with Marvin.

When Paul Brown retired, we got Bill "Tiger" Johnson. The 49ers eventually got Bill Walsh. Both were assistants under Paul Brown. How did that go for each team?

Considering the Bengals are one of 4 teams to be in the playoffs 6 out of the last 7 years. Its hard to say the Bengals have been mediocre. As much as not having any playoff wins suck, the majority of fan bases would have loved to had a playoff team to watch for the last 5 years and 6 of 7.

With that said, the Bengals need to make that next jump and get to the next level, and it doesn't appear Lewis is going to get them there. Lewis needs credit for what he has done so far, and put us in this position. However it may take someone else to get them over the hump.

When looking at it from a neutral standpoint, it seems that the talent the Bengals have on the roster would make it an attractive job to a much higher level of coaching than what Marvin Lewis operates on, as I could see the right guy smashing through the Cincy playoff wall in grand fashion.

Would a big name take that chance with the Bengals, and have the personality, confidence and charisma — and success — to push Mike Brown further away from day-to-day control?

When looking at it from a less-neutral, more Black and Gold-tinged standpoint, that prospect scares the hell out of me.

Agreed I honestly wanted them to get rid of Marvin after 2010 and then 2013 playoff loss. A guy I like is Josh McDaniels. I like that he has been a head coach already. While he didn't do great, I don't think he did as bad as people thought. Then he went back to the Pat's after getting some head coaching experience. I think he would do well with the Bengals or wherever he goes next.

Still the only team with 0 playoff wins in 25 years. Marvin Lewis has proven again and again he isn't the answer and it's way past due for him to move on. The biggest game Marvin won since being here was beating the undefeated KC Chiefs team in 2003. Nothing since has proven he can prepare a team for a big game and even worse I've never seen any of his teams able to make adjustments and even worse he has had one of the worst disciplined teams in the league since he's been here.

Marvin was good for introducing a winning to Cincinnati compared to where they were before his arrival, but winning in Cincinnati is a lot different than winning anywhere else. In Cincinnati, many of the fans are simply satisfied with getting to the playoffs and the Bengals have been able to do that by beating bad teams year in and year out while losing to good teams year in and year out but when the bad teams outnumber the good it gets us to the promised land and that makes people happy. Marvin has been able to do that all the while being the worst game manager I've ever seen. He brought the team from the abyss to the point where they actually get respect but still doesn't get them over the hump.

Its been long over due for Marvin to move on. The problem is the ownership. Mike Brown has never hired a HC who has been a successful HC before. As a matter of fact I believe the only HC with any HC experience he's ever hired before was Bruce Coslet. So although we are ready to move past Marvin, I wouldn't count in Mike Brown to make a good hire for his replacement. But it has to be done. We will never know until it happens.

Do you think he will let Marvin help with the hire?

I think Katie Blackburn will have more

say than Marvin does. The problem for the Bengals is because we don't have Hue or Zimmer here anymore, the Bengals may not make a coaching move because no one is on staff right now that Mike would promote. I said it when they let Zimm go that may have been the biggest mistake Mike Brown made since hiring Dave Shula.
