Even if we are alone, and I'm in the camp that there has to be something else out there, is it arrogant for us to believe aliens would want to waste their time and resources abducting us? Maybe they came and realized how (their thinking) backward and dumb we are, "they use paper to clean their butts" etc. maybe they're on an island like paradise of a planet saying "no thanks, I'll just chill here".

 

As for traversing the universe, even if we can go light speed, I don't believe our bodies will be able to handle it. And if we just went normal speed, we'd have to sacrifice numerous generations of people just to reach the outer edge of our galaxy.

 

Space is expanding at an insane amount of speed every second, so every second every galaxy is speeding away from each other that much more, making space travel that much more difficult

 

Just like we experiment on lower life forms I believe Aliens would do the same.

On the expansion of space, see the above and that is not completely true. Our local group of galaxies (The Local Group) are actually coming together. I guess this is where gravity is out performing Dark Matter/Dark Energy and who knows what else.

There's a great corollary to that that Brian Greene and others talk about. The general premise that any civilization with sufficient technology to traverse the incredible vastness of space likely also has the technology to destroy itself. They posit that one depressing possibility is that a civilization that develops the technology to destroy itself (whether nuclear weapons or chemical or biological) will invariably do so, given enough time, and that's why we've never seen evidence of other civilizations visiting our solar system.

 

It's a real bummer and an interesting theory but I'm unconvinced my most sociological theories involving things that are "inevitable".

 

I would be not at all surprised to discover other civilizations out there. The numbers are too large for that possibility to be discounted.

 

Good post and all the more reason some civilizations may need to venture out in space.
