Great insight on the 33rd RC! I heard the Ast girl from Ryle is not playing to answer that question

I know she really struggled with some injuries over the years and I didn't know if she ever fully recovered from them. It's a shame really nice athlete and good kid.

Agreed with the insight on the 33rd RC. Great job as always breaking things down. Good luck to the BIRDS this year! Go JAGS! Most of all hope all the girls stay injury free and have fun! After all that's what this is all about.

Beal being there definitely makes them a team to keep an eye on.

Beal transferred from Holy Cross right? Is she eligible? There was all the discussion about Martin moving from Notre Dame to Highlands but I didn't see any discussion on Beal going from Holy Cross to Boone County. I don't follow girls basketball that closely so there probably is an obvious explanation that I am unaware of.

Well "I think" she moved into Boone's district, which takes some of the red tape away. But I really don't know the situation. Just what I heard. I know there's someone on here that knows a lot more about it than I do.

Let's not start all questions about Martin moving or not moving all over again?:lol2:

Are a couple of others in this group also new transfers........ Gomez was at Conner, maybe Gieske also?

was impressed with Highlands this summer at UofL team camp. I think they will be much improved this year. Holmes is deserving of its ranking. frankly, the rest you can throw into a hat and pull out a different winner each night. Lots of parity. The coaches will earn their pay this year.

33rd has a lot of talent! Jordan,Duncan,Hurst have all ready done a lot of heavy lifting in the past. I assume they will again. Someone said Anderson gets overlooked at times as well as Jordan in my opinion. Have seen them both play a few times and they just are not flashy players. both are fundamentally sound! would take them in my top 10 any day is all i am saying. Rcc9 who do you like in the 33rd you seem to know a lot about these kids?

The real meat of this region is in the 35th district. Holmes, Holy Cross, Notre Dame and Beechwood. It's a shame 2 out of 4 of these teams won't be at the regional tournament! Here's my take on the 35th:

1) Holmes. Consensus top team in the region. Won last year, returns a majority of starters. Englemon, Johnson and Stovall are arguably the best three together in the region. Athletic, quick, ball skills, scorers. They will smoother you defensively. Add in underrated sophomore Kamari Graham and they only get better. She can shoot the ball! Only weakness, they lose Brown and Gulley, their inside players. Will they be able to stop bigger teams?

2. Holy Cross. Speaking of bigger teams! Probably under rated in this poll, will likely finish the season in the top 5 in the region. Malaysia Chames, Courtney Turner and Sydney Thomas will be giant trees around the basket for HC. Not a single team in the region has even close to this kind of size and strength. Add in experienced (starter for state champion holy cross team 2014-15) and one of the top guards, Aleah Tucker, and HC becomes a team that will challenge. And Tucker is not their only skilled player. I don't think losing Beal will be a big factor because this is the year Piper Macke and Olivia Crigler become key factors. Macke will be a top PG in the region the next four years. Crigler can score. The HC-Holmes game will be a good one. Size vs Speed.

3. Notre Dame. Also will finish higher than their ranking, they are better than #10. New coach, new system. No more Martin. But ND never lacks for athletes and good ballers. Hagen, Gribben and Baugh make up the main ND three. Hagen was slowed by injury last year but this year she will show why she is a top 10 player in this region. If Gribben can hold down the fort inside this team will make the 35th district super competitive (as always). In addition to the three, Abby Hoppius and Abby Tierney are more than ready to step in and compete. But those girls will be pushed by a strong freshman class with Mary Camille (MC) Hagen and soccer player Ellie Hellmann. It's an up hill battle for NDA to make the region this year but they have the peices in place to do it.

4. Beechwood. Oddly the #4 team in the district has the #1 player in the region. Senior and Bucknell commit, Ally Johnson, will always keep the Lady Tigers competitive. This team loses only Olivia Stokes from last years starters. Cats Pause doesn't even have them ranked. Best player in the region and they return every starter but one... This team finishes top 10 in the region by the end of the year. Beechwood will struggle with depth. But they lose one Stokes and add another this year in freshman Jocelyn Stokes. Her and a couple other incoming freshman will help with the depth issue. Senior Lainey Sullivan will need to step up this year to help compliment Johnson. The Lady Tigers have challenges to overcome but I think by seasons end they will be tough team to come against. And finish just inside the top 10 teams in the region.

The 35th region will be competitive with each other and always bring tough games to the other teams in the region. Toughest district by far with IMO has four teams that finish in the top 10 in the region. Including two teams that could be the regional champ.

RCC9, what you think about the 35th? How about that 36th district? NCC lost a lot with Davenport, I'm not sure they can overcome the loss to finish top 10 in the region despite Cats Pause rankings?

Holmes is clearly number one in this district. They do lose some key inside play. In my opinion, that hurts them more on the defensive side. Those two were big and strong and could neutralize any size disadvantage Holmes would have had. They also lost a really good athlete in and her speed and athleticism will be missed. But they still have enough in the closet to make it very tough on teams. Not as deep and not as big, but they still find the way.

I'm not as hyped on HC as you are just yet. I agree with everything you say, but where the size is an advantage, I think it will be a disadvantage at times as well. All the kids you mentioned are nice players. And they are going to be really good team. Just think they are a year or two away. I think they will miss McClendon desperately this year. And they lost Beale. In the past you didn't dare press them because McClendon would shred you. As good as Tucker is and even Macke coming in, I don't think pressing them is out of the question and speeding them up won't be as hard as it was in the past. They are young and will make mistakes that allow them to get out of there rythem. And if they can't slow down and control the tempo, they will have some tough matchups with some of the teams in the ninth. If you coach and let them play at their pace, you should be fired the next day!! Lol. Kidding of course. Now some teams may not be able to razzle them enough to get them out of their game and they will look really good against those teams. But I think some teams are going to be a really tough matchup for them. I think they are going to be really good as the young guards get better and stronger. But just my gut says they are still at least a year away. I do think they are too 5 and will get to the region, but it will take some time to develop.

I like ND bball and love a couple of the kids on the team. But I just don't see it this year as others do. I hope I'm wrong because it doesn't feel the same when ND is down. I know they have athletes, but I just feel there are a lot of open questions here. I've outlined them in other posts, so I won't go into detail. But here's a few. New coach, new system, lost 75% of their scoring and the players left have been mostly role players, not scorers. Maybe there's a reason for that. I don't know. And the last thing, love her or hate her, Martin is gone and she was 100% of the other teams gameplan and focus last year. On offense and defense. Now that focus switches over to the other kids and gets distributed more equally. You don't have 5 girls focusing on where Martin is on the floor and giving up opportunities to others because of the lack of attention on them. If we see someone be able to overcome that early and take on the scoring and defensive presence that left with Martin, I would be a little more on the side of them having a great year. But like I said, too many open questions for me just yet.

Love the Beechwood team and love AJ! They are my sleeper again. But we know they don't have a lot of depth and play in a strong district. The season is long and will be tough for them to maintain a high level all year with lack of depth. They will win their share and have the ability to surprise the big girls on any given night.

Another very competitive district.

I hope people don't get feelings hurt. I'm just honest and call it like I see it. It's just my opinion and it means nothing to anyone that matters! Lol!

Well I just typed the whole 36th and my phone ran out of juice and erased it all. So here goes again.

Newport.

Unfortunately they lost a lot and don't have a lot in the pipeline right now. They will be in rebuilding mode.

Bellevue

They lost a lot in Kira Ross. She did a lot for the team last year. But they still have some players left in the tank. They also have a staff that cares about them and their development. I Look for them to have a nice year in the small school division.

Dayton

They have had a really nice group of athletes coming up for the last couple years. Most of them are on the scene now. They have a new coach in Steve Hunt. He has a ton of bball knowledge and I know he'll get these young athletes to play for him. I think they should be really good in the small school division. Except for a couple games a year, I really like to root for Bellevue and Dayton.

NCC

Think they are really gonna miss Davenport. When she wasn't on the court or had a bad game (rarely), they really struggled. I think NCC has a lot of athletes, but I don't consider them bball players. (Now hold on, hear me out!)The Bridewell girl and Kara Zimmerman have turned themselves into bball players. But they are still young (sophs). But I feel the rest are really good atehletes and they don't have that Davenport type to carry them. I love what NCC does on the girls side. Many of their kids play 2-3 sports. That's awesome and they stay very competitive in all their sports. But sometimes that catches up to them when they lack kids that focus on that particular sport and they end up with a lot of athletes. Kinda like HHS boys bball teams of late. I think they will struggle when they play teams with multiple bball players on the roster. Where teams can match their athleticism, but also have more bball skill. That's not to make any of the the blue and gold angry or a shot by any means. I have all kinds of respect for the kids on the hill and what they are able to accomplish with a small enrollment. On the good side, I hear Freppon is playing again. She's a very athletic and long kid that will definitely help them! On the bad side, I have heard rumors that Rice won't be in the lineup this year. I guess time will tell on that.

Highlands

Well of course they will beat everyone and win state! And my daughter will be the MVP! It's their year!!!

Okay, back to reality. The addition of Martin was the shot in the arm this team needed. Some may not feel the same as me, but that's my opinion. This team would have been competitive and fun to watch without her, but with her experience and skill, it puts them in the running with the top teams in the region. HHS graduated 3 very nice players and they will be missed. But this is a changing of the guard and it won't be your same ole HHS team. The last couple years I would describe HHS as a finesse team. Well that's about to change. This team will have plenty of skill, but they will also be very physical. In recent years, several scouting reports included roughing the Birds up and intimidating them and I don't blame coaches for doing that. I would have too. But if that's your strategy this year...I wish you luck! This team is strong and physical. They will get after you all over the court. If you bite, they will bite back and you may not like the result! I would describe them as a slower but more physical Holmes team. They still have some speed, but they have strength to go with it. Their weakness will be guarding good post players. I don't think they will have trouble rebounding because they are so physical, but they are not big and stopping good smart post players requires some size no matter how strong you are. I think it will take a month to really see what this team can do. I think they will rely a lot on their sophomores to develop to get where they really want To be at the end of the season. That may take some time. But with the development of the sophomores and the senior class, this team should have plenty of quality depth by tournament time.

When exactly is the trade deadline for the 9th Region. Everyone find a team and let's play some basketball already. And for Lawnboy...."see you on the court".

We could all just meet at the armory in Ft Thomas every week and choose up teams! They have three courts!

So that's how its done. LOL
