Mustangs is a carryover from the St. Mary High School Mustangs (1954-61) from which Brossart High School evolved. When we became a central high school that served six Southern Campbell County parishes and renamed Bishop Brossart High School, the Mustangs mascot came along.

Good question. St. Mary High School was always green-white, which carried over to Brossart High School.

 

Present day St. Mary grade school wear blue and gold which they adopted when they moved from Grove street when combined with St. Mary High School, to the other end of Jefferson Street in their stand-alone structure back in 1961. Perhaps the Boosters Club was made up of a majority of NCC fans. :no:

Owsley County's Owls mascot name derives from the name of the county, which when pronounced sounds like OWLS-LEY.

The maroon and white colors were copied from Eastern Kentucky State College (or may have been called Teacher's College years ago). I think a school principal from back in the '40's graduated from Eastern and suggested the college's school colors for Owsley.

Pike Central is a combination of Johns Creek High School (Blue & White with Bearcats mascot) and Mullins High School (Orange & Black with Tigers Mascot) that opened in 1994.

 

They took the blue from Johns Creek & the Orange from Mullins for the school colors. The mascot is the Hawks. Not sure if that was just a student vote, its been too long for me to remember honestly.

 

Shelby Valley High School is a combination of Virgie High School (Blue & White with Eagles mascot) and the Dorton High School (Red and White with Wildcats mascot)

 

They took the school colors of Virgie & the mascot of Dorton for the new school.

 

East Ridge High School is a combination of Elkhorn City (Blue & Yellow with Cougars mascot) Millard (Brown and Yellow with Mustangs mascot) and Feds Creek (Blue and Yellow with Vikings mascot)

 

The new school has Dark Blue & Light Blue for colors & Warriors as the mascot. (not sure where they got the color combo or mascot from:) )

I seem to recall reading something in an old KHSAA directory (from the 1950s) that listed school colors as orange and black. Maybe someone else can help us out?

Jeff Bridgeman in "Kentucky High School Basketball Encyclopedia" says that Hellier was the orange and black.

 

That old KHSAA directory also says orange and black.

My research hasn't uncovered the "why" of Madisonville's Maroons. I always presumed it was just the color (of the Maroon and Black)...just like Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College, Mississippi State and Chicago State (an original member of the Big Ten)...all from back in the day.

Highlands used to use the mascot "Blue Devils" but everyone knows if you are from Kentucky you have to hate the Blue Devils .....so they changed it to the present day Bluebirds, lol Actually, this is partially true, but I'll let someone else pick it up from here............

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong on this one about Bracken County Polar Bears. I understand that the original gymnasium was a good trek from the school across an open field. The basketball team would make the trip across the frozen field everyday for practice and someone remarked "there go the Polar Bears".

 

Again, I have no clue on the accuracy of the story, but liked it.

The building that is used for the now Somerset High School was once a Masonic college that was donated to the city as a library and later adopted as a school. Purple and gold are colors in the spectrum that higher ranking officers wear.

It's not my school but there's little doubt how Wolfe County got its mascot name.
