Thursday Games?

Featured Replies

Several schools played games last Thursday and several more are playing this week. There are typically a few northern Kentucky Thursday games each year. What are your thoughts on playing on Thursday? Like or dislike? Is it good for teams or does it break up the routine?

I'm really only for it when there is a clear reason to do it.

For example, last Thursday Grayson County agreed to play BG on Thursday before Fall Break. That will be BG's only Thursday game, but it was done so that those wanting to get a jump on their fall break festivities could get a head start and that makes sense to me.

Otherwise, I think it messes up more than it helps and would think you'd lose money at the gate.

I would also like to see this alternate day/time implemented in the playoffs. Northern Kentucky does this best. For example, Highlands typically likes/invites their opponents to play early in the day, the day after Thanksgiving giving their guest the sure likelihood of getting home at a decent hour and also allowing folks that also wanted to go to the Newport Cath vs Danville game (or BG vs Fern Creek in my case) a chance to do that.

BG area doesn't do that. BG played Fern Creek at the same time South Warren played Franklin Simpson. I know "several" that would have gone to both if the opportunity presented itself.

Just food for thought.....

I'm not a fan of playing when you have school the next day.

I agree. However, many public schools have been off the first Friday of October (even before the invent of Fall Break) for the state teachers' union meeting. I think that is the impetus for Thursday games in the past, although that isn't necessarily the case anymore.

This is a different topic, but I agree with you. I think schools should make an effort to play day/night doubleheaders on Thanksgiving Friday if possible to boost crowds and money for all schools.

Thursday games means another night to catch a game, and if there is a Saturday game it's even better. Who wouldn't like to catch a game 3 nights in a row?

I think a weekly Thursday night game of the week is a great idea. Allows the kids playing in that game to checkout another game on that Friday and be a kid for one night during the season.

PS. Fall Break should be abolished.

Quite frankly, I enjoy Thursday games when the opponent for the week is a relatively down school (no need to mention names, you know which ones) so we can scout our next opponent live on Friday.

All of the Jefferson County public schools played last Thursday because they were on fall break starting Friday.

I like that idea, too. I think it would work better in a more densely populated area (northern Kentucky, Jefferson County, maybe Fayette County).

In Kentucky, Friday night football is pretty much all you see. In other parts of the country, Thursday and Saturday games are more prevalent. Friday is still the prime night, but you see it more than you do in the Bluegrass.

Haha, my wife is probably the only teacher that hates fall break.

That's the way it was back in the day.

Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg were festooned with KY teachers and their families that weekend.

If school wants to go back to being a late August/Labor Day'ish start...fire away on it. Be gone.

Football Open week not the same as fall break in the current set up? Horrible.

Football Open week coinciding w/ fall break? I can't begin to express the type of love for that.
