Is Central Still "Central"?

Featured Replies

I think you're seeing a demographic shift where more kids are being "directed" to Waggener and Male. Scroggins certainly hasn't forgotten how to coach......he just isn't getting the best players. for several years, Central continually produced D1 talent....almost at the rate of Trinity. That's no longer happening. Tim Patterson and Anthony Wales are the last ones I can remember.....

I'm curious as to what you mean by "directed" to Waggener and Male?

Is Tim Patterson playing any where?

Per this link, it appears he is playing at Kentucky Wesleyan. I know he began at UK, then went to a JUCO in Arizona. The KWC link also shows he played at Lincoln University (don't specify either the one in Missouri or Pennsylvania).

Typical Jefferson Co enrollment games. They're notorious for it.

The bolded is the key. There is no substitue for quality coaching AT THE YOUTH LEVEL.

At Belfry there is 3 key factors that IMO has led to the development of their success.

1. Louisville Central, first and foremost. Belfry saw in 2007 and 2010 where the new bar needed to be. I 100% believe the leaders of the Belfry program took stock of everything they were doing, and set about working very hard to make the improvements they felt needed to be made to beat Central. I know a lot of people say "work harder" is the recipe to getting better, and in this case, I believe it. Not just the physical work either, but the grinding job of honest evaluation of your program, at every aspect, and then identifying the changes that were needed, and then implementing them from top to bottom. I saw it happen, and it was an impressive thing.

2. Youth program rebirth. Spurred by the high school coaches at the top, a group of leaders for the youth league was tasked with redevelopment of the entire league. A renewed focus on quality coaching, support from the HS and MS staff, and implementing rules with emphasis on fundamentals, participation and a commitment to introduce the kids at this level to Belfry's system. They play two divisions, 3rd/4th grade, and 5th/6th grade. Everybody below that plays flag.

3. Middle School Football. When the new high school was built in 2005 and all the area elementary students in 6-8 grade were consolidated into Belfry Middle School, there was skepticism about how it would work out. It has been a Godsend. The program has been blessed again with good quality coaches to run it. These guys are good men, role models, and leaders first; and solid football coaches second. The HS staff supports them, works with them, and takes an interest in their program. Now you have guys who used to play for 3 or 4 different teams until 9th grade who are working together in 7th and 8th grade and playing two separate schedules against quality teams. By the time they get to high school, they are a solid unit, very fundamentally sound, and well versed in the system run by the high school.

It is easy to say Belfry's run is due to having the best talent, and it is partially true. Talent and athleticism are the building blocks, but those things are raw and have to be worked and developed into football players. Belfry's coaching staff has done a tremendous job of doing that, at the right pace, from the youth level on up, and they don't get enough credit for it. That is the thing that always intrigued me with programs like Trinity, Highlands, Mayfield, etc., that were able to sustain the success. They don't win a lot of "coaching" awards because people get to thinking anyone could win coaching at those places, when in fact, they work extremely hard to develop that success and it is much more due to coaching and hard work than many want to admit.

Wow I didn't think I was going to have that much to say but when I got started.... :D

This is a great analysis of what's occurred at Belfry.

What 'Tusi Said HAHA

I cannot agree more... the thing I add to the Middle School discussion is something I spoke about in the Bowling Green thread as well. The fact Belfry has stopped playing a regional schedule at the Feeder Level and has started to compete with great teams statewide is a huge help as well. Have to keep pushing those boundaries.

For those that are wondering "When is Belfry going to fall off?"

Well consider this:

- Belfry has won their Divisional State Title at the Middle School Level every year since this current crop of Seniors first did it.

- This current Freshman Class may have been the best Middle School team of the bunch. They went undefeated and even beat the large school Champs (Johnson Central) two or three different times. Pikeville was the small school Runner-Up and they beat them two times as well.

- The current Middle School team just lost their first game to Lexington Catholic in a shootout. They aren't near the level of last year's team but they will still compete for another Title, they have a very good QB and some good backs. Just not the size or Defense as some of the previous teams.

It's easy to hate on Haywood's one dimensional Offense but when these kids already know the playbook before they step foot at Belfry High School it puts Belfry at a distinct advantage. The staff can get straight to teaching advanced techniques as the fundamentals and playbook have long since been instilled by coaches at the Feeder level. It also makes replacing departing talent much easier.

Just curious but how many of the actual starters are really from belfry and how many are form accross the border? I know Belfry is a closer school for some from WVA but still how many from there?

^^^^^^^^^

And Im not implying recruiting since the program does that for itself, but still how many actual kids from a small school like that are really from each place.

I have heard most starters are not from Ky. Is that true?

That is simply not true. The vast majority are from Belfry.

I think Central is as much still central, as Highlands is Highlands. Cycle

I certainly think that as long as Scroggins is in place...Central will always be in the mix for a championship. He can flat coach. That being said....I believe he's looking to make a move.

Not true. Purely rumors and gossip.

Corbett= Transferred to Belfry as a Soph from Logan, WV

Bentley= Lives in WV currently but pays tuition, him and his brothers have spent their life in Belfry schools and their parents have willingly paid tuition

Horton= Lives in KY now, moved to Belfry in the 6th Grade from Red Jacket. David Jones' nephew.

Don't think anyone else off hand applies or comes to mind. Catron's family may have moved when he was young? Don't think so, but maybe. The rest are home grown Belfry products who came up through Belfry Middle. I do know Lawson (big Sophomore OL) transferred to Belfry from somewhere in TN. There is a Rash kid who is a backup linemen who grew up in Belfry, his family moved to Florida, and he transferred back this year.

Wellman, Varney, Scott, Woolum, Adkins, Dotson, Fletcher.. all Belfry boys with many of those having some of the msot devout Belfry supporting fathers you will meet HAHA

Ever since David Jones transferred to Belfry and helped lead them to a State Title the erroneous notion that Belfry has a ton of WV players has been born. The actual truth is it probably going more in the opposite direction than people realize.

I know specifically of two Mingo Central players who had their families move to Belfry over the past three years who then transferred right back to Mingo Central because they could not get playing time. At Mingo Central they went on to be key part of their Offense. One became a 1000+ yard rusher and the other just ran for over 100 yards the other night after he was 4th on the Belfry depth chart at FB.

That is simply not true. The vast majority are from Belfry.

Majority of starters or majority of sideline standers

Majority of starters or majority of sideline standers
Both.

It is funny what rumors people start, most of them are completely wrong. I don't think the Belfry program has anything to hide, and I'm glad the questions are being asked. The answers, however, are probably not going to support much in the way of providing excuses for anyone who is looking for one.

I got this message the other day from another member who was asking about the same issue, but this one was pretty outlandish. Here was the question:

I was at the Russell Ironton game and several of us were talking about the dynasty of Belfrey football. One guy piped up who I did not know and made the following statement, " Belfrey has three high schools to choose from and two are in WV." He went on to say that because the two high schools don't have a football program students are allowed to go to school in WV. and play on the Belfrey football team. I had never heard such a thing and wondered just how much was true if any.

Here was my reply, and it goes along with what ATLCat has stated above.

LOL, no that isn't true. Funny how a good rumor can grow legs and run. I don't even know what that means, 3 high schools to choose from. ??

Everyone on the team is a student at Belfry. The vast majority are kids who live in the Belfry district, and their daddys and uncles and sometimes grandfathers have played ball at Belfry in earlier generations. There are several kids who live in WV but attend school at Belfry, and they pay tuition. Most of those kids have attended school at Belfry feeder schools for years, and have grown up a Pirate. There are a couple of kids who transferred to Belfry during their high school years. One starter is the QB, Corbett, who transferred to Belfry after his freshman year.

About 5 years ago all the Mingo Co, WV schools consolidated into Mingo Central. That school is a 45 minute drive for some kids who can commute to Belfry in 10-15 minutes and I don't blame those parents for sending their kids there.

This is nothing new. When I was in high school in the 80's it was the same way. The local HS in WV had a lot of racial tension and lots of kids who wanted no part of it came to Belfry. In the 50s and 60s a lot of KY kids went to school at Williamson WV, and that school won some state championships in the big 3 sports.

I certainly think that as long as Scroggins is in place...Central will always be in the mix for a championship. He can flat coach. That being said....I believe he's looking to make a move.

Sad to say, I've heard that too. His son is one of the better QB's in Louisville as an 8th grader. Question, why would he not bring him to Central? He happens to be one heck of a baseball player as well.

Central will be fine come playoff time. They are starting 7 sophomores, 7 juniors, and 8 seniors this year. Of the 22, 4 of them played last year. Give them time and Central will be Central again.

Both.

My personal favorite instance was seeing a friend of a friend on facebook make a post/comment after Belfry had beat Bourbon County for the second straight year.

They basically had sour grapes and was commenting on a Facebook status and said something along the lines of "I was at the game and you wouldn't believe how many cars had WV license plates and the ones that had Kentucky plates even had stickers from WV Auto Dealerships! Shame someone has to stoop to getting players from other areas"

This one was too ripe not to engage.

Considering that it was a State Semi-Final on Thanksgiving Weekend you have to assume family members were making the trip. Secondly, the auto dealership stickers just cracked me up and proved this person had no clue where Belfry lies geographically. Then the irony of his post was that Bourbon County that year had a QB who came from Nicholas County, a WR that came from Lafayette, and like two or three other confirmed transfers. Number of High School transfers on that Belfry team? Zero. HAHA

I hope he sticks with it. I have even heard that he may step away from Head Coaching all together to focus on his son.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for Scroggins and have it on good authority that Coach Haywood respects him a ton as well. Truly one of the best football coaches in the State and the way he gets his kids to buy in and play team football focused on Defense is a testament to his ability.

As a side note, I also have it on good authority that the LexCath loss last year really stung him. He was really high on that group of Seniors and thought they could do something special and really felt like they let that game slip away.

Same...I'm hearing the same stuff but won't believe anything until I see it. Nothing but good things going around the community regarding Young Scroggins and his athletic ability. Are my sources correct when saying Young Scroggins is the best player in CSAA football? Is he going the Catholic route in high school? Wouldn't be a bad idea to distance yourself for the old man...don't want to ride coattails at Central if his old man is the coach. Or maybe Coach will get on at X/T - heck, he could be the next man up at X if things don't change. Bring his son with him. That would shock the world!
