If you don't think football matters to the educational leaders of Male HS I would call you extremely naive.

Last I checked Jefferson County has a significantly larger population than Kenton.

I don't know about you but $3K a year is not a little advantage. (Tuition)

Not sure there are more good football teams in Louisville than in NKY,and per capita I would say all in all NKY equates itself very well.

Other than the private schools Male is easily the big dog with Manuel a distant second. I am not sure there is truly that much competition for the elite talent in Jefferson County that can't afford a private school education.

Once again they are all obstacles to overcome not insurmountable but obstacles none the less.

 

I can tell you that HHS has a pretty good tradition and history...better than even Male and Football has absolutely no bearing on educational decisions and how they they run their educational programs and who gets into the school. So if Male does, shame on them. They aren't there to create football players. Their, and every high school's main concern is education of the students. Sports are just a part of the experience for a high school kid. Again, do you think they take all the football applicants and sort them to the top? Noway! Male is good at girls and boys bball, softball and several other sports. If it were about athletics, all the athletes would be competing against each other to get in.

 

Jefferson is larger. But again, a lot more very good football options too. You are still competing for the really good players and they are limited. You must develop the others. And you said Jefferson is bigger than Kenton co. That's true, but a good football school in NKY will pull from more than just their county. I look at NKY as being compared to Louisville. In NKY, families don't really look at county boundaries anymore if they are looking to go elsewhere. The three are like one big county with it comes to kids moving around...because logistics are easy. My daughters live with their mom right down the street from SK. Both very good athletes. They could have very easily went to SK for free! They went/go to HHS.

 

Top schools that compete for talent in Louisville and maintain a pretty darn good program.

Then you have Ballard and Butler who are more on our level.

 

Once the majority go to X and T and then some can't move from all the other schools and you throw in the other very good teams listed, eventually the elite players are not as many as you think.

 

I'm not saying Male doesn't attract athletes. I'm saying there is a reason it does. What's that reason? Find out what the formula is. Why do kids want to go there and why do families want to send their kids there? They just didn't wake up one day and declare they are going to be good in football and everyone believed them and starting transferring there.

 

Being able to send them across town for free (which you can do in Kenton Co) and have transportation is a slight advantage. But after they have to qualify and be accepted, compete against 100's of other kids from all walks of life to get in the door and overcome the challenges of actually getting to school...how many impact football players are they really getting out of that deal? And do we really feel like that reflects the gap between Male and Ryle or SK?

So what's your point?

 

I feel like this is the conversation that happens all over NKY:

 

Coach:Okay boys, I know it's August and it's hot. Let's sit down and put out goals together. Who's got one?

Player: I do coach.

Coach: Go ahead.

Player: Let's win district!

Coach: Great one son! Who Else?

Player: Let's win the region!

Coach: Another good one Who else?

Player: Let make a run at second in the State!

Player: Well we obviously can't win state. Or at least that's what I've been led to believe by everyone around my life since I was in Pee Wee ball. So I thought second was what we were shooting for!

 

Again, I've never lined up across from anyone and didn't think I didn't have a chance to win in any sport. And if I got my butt kicked, I went out and figured out how to not let it happen again. It can be done. It takes time and it take buy in, but it can be done. There is no reason why Lexington schools and NKY schools should not be able to compete. Period.

My point is that it's a hard path to state title for most teams outside of Jefferson county. I don't see why some folks from that area continue to take shots at NKY schools like they're a failure and not being successful because of their lack of championships. If we followed that logic then only one county in the state is successful at football in the biggest class.

This is what our kids hear and see all the time from the time they are in Pee Wee. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't have some effect on which sport a kid decides to play earlier in life when he hears "you can never be a state competitior in football". My guess is that some really good athletes have heard that in the past and subconsicencely chose another sport if he was destined to have to go to a NKY 6a school. I know I'm reaching, but I bet it has happened. My point, we have to change the culture and what kids hear and believe to be true. They will believe whatever adults put in their head from an early age. Now are you not just only up against trying to beat Trinity, X and Male, you're trying to convince your kids that they even have a shot.

I agree about changing the culture. I think Simon Kenton's coaches have done a great job of that. Still a long hard climb to the top for teams that have never been there before. I think they're making strides though.

What advantages has HHS over any other school other than the Boone co schools since they chose to close their enrollment? And I'll say it again. HHS has no room for growth and union is growing like wild fire. So now who has advantages. I guarantee you're adding more kids and gaining more athletes per year than HHS is, regardless if they have open enrollment. They have nowhere to put them!!

 

Any school up here beside Boone can draw from other districts. As well as the majority of schools across the state.

And your son was approached by who? Other coaches at high schools? And I'd have to really know what was said before I'd believe that for a minute. You know how many times HHS fans have heard "my some was approached" to find out it was completely false and what was actually said was not being approached at all. It was casual conversation and the parent took pride in "his son was asked to play by HHS" Those story's come out EVERY year. Don't you think with all the past hatred of HHS football that if that was actually going on they would have been caught by now??? Everyone and their brother have tried to "catch" HHS. Hilarious!

 

And again. The names mentioned on here were three names in different sports over 35 years. Thats doesn't really feel like a trend!

And lastly, if I were a kid looking to compete for a state football title, I guess I'd move out of the Boone district if they choose to not open enrollment and that's holding me back. I can't control what the school board elects to do but I can control where I live.

But I thought you inferred that isn't the case. That all or close to all the players come from HHS district.

 

To me it makes no difference. Just bothersome when some try to act as if it doesn't happen.
