Is Ryle a contender this year?

So Conners state title in the early 80's is the only one in NKY?

Not sure what your point is here though. Are you saying it's infrequent for a closed enrollment to win a title? First, I'm not sure Conner was closed at that time. But regardless, a closed school winning anything is going to be very slim because there are barely any closed school districts in the entire state. Closed schools districts are in the vast majority. Basically all you're saying is Conner is the only Boone Co school to win a title. Because all the other schools in nky have open enrollment. And there are several other schools that do have open enrollment and have never won a title too.

again, SK is full. No seats for anyone there wanting to transfer in. If you live in Kenton County the only school with open seats is Scott. Dixie has been full in the past, haven't seen #'s this year.

Open enrollment is a crutch that people just won't give up on. It's not the same as Trinity or St. X.

And for the record, if SK continues to keep open enrollment and the growth in Independence continues to grow and they don't split the school if enrollment, they are on a path to get there someday. Reason...I think their feeders are booming, and producing nice players every year, they have made some great program decisions, they have influenced and gained support of the school and community, and their recent success is starting to attract kids.

It was just a question. Also I didn't know that most districts were open. It will never work in Boone County. Ryle and Cooper have already expanded and I would guess kids moving for sports would pick these schools. Boone County High School would probably take a huge hit if they opened the districts.

Why is SK full? Is it because several in that district have already chosen to go there prior to them being full? Meaning are they full because it was the first choice of several kids from all over Kenton Co. And I know that a couple girls bball players have recently gone to SK (last year or so). I don't think they live in the district.

And I didn't say X and T didn't have an advantage. I'm talking about Male and SC. But regardless of who we want to use, I just get wore out with the defeatist attitude from NKY all the time. It feels like we program our kids to always play for second and provide excuses as to why they can't compete instead of figuring out way to compete. I want NKY football to dominate on all levels. But man it gets old hearing all the excuses all the time. I'm not saying we have to win every state championship. I'm saying out ways to at least compete for them.

Well let's see how this year goes. We have 4 very good 6a teams in NKY this year.

Why limit it to NKY. With the exception of 1 year or 2 here and there that's the state of KY outside of Louisville forever.

Has a state championship for 6A or the old 4A ever came back to NKY?

I don't think so...at least for a long time.

I wanted to answer these questions:

Since 4A came into existence in 1975 (basically 40 years to 2015), 7 non-Jefferson County schools have won the 4A or 6A (largest classification at the time) State Championship, as follows:

2013 - Scott County beat Meade County

1996 - Nelson County beat Paul Dunbar

1991 - George Rodgers Clark beat St X

1987 - Shelby County beat Boone County

1984 - Christian County beat Ballard

1982 - Christian County beat Louisville Southern

1981 - Henry Clay beat Louisville DeSales

Uh yea, because just about every school in the state falls into one of those categories!

No they don't. There are plenty of public schools.

No they don't. There are plenty of public schools.

Right! An independent school is a public school! No difference between HHS and a County school (other than Boone schools). For example, out of district kids can go to Campbell Co just as easy as a Camp Co kid could go to HHS. Insert any other school in there you want (other than Boone schools).

AND all those public schools have open enrollment (other than boone). So yes, they all fall into one of those categories.

So I look at Male. They are slightly larger than SK and slightly smaller than Ryle. Louisville has a lot of schools as well. And a lot of very competing choices for the best players.

All the others things you mentioned are controlled by the program. Level of developed talent, support, lack of playoff runs, staff longevity is all controlled by the program. Male earned the respect of people to have kids sent there. They just didn't wake up and said they wanted to be good in football. Same with Scott County. They both made a commitment to being good in football. You develop talent which develops success and success can bring more success.

I just don't get why all NKY big schools just play for second every year. They are big enough and should have enough kids to be competitive. If other public schools can do it (male, manual, SC), then so can SK. I would give the Boone co schools a slighter chance because their district handicaps them with not having open enrollment. But SK should be able to compete. There staff has been there a long time! So you could take that off the table for them.

My point is what one of the others was trying to make. If you keep saying you can't, you never will. Find a way! I have never in my life felt like I was playing any season for second place. And if someone told me we could never beat someone else, I made it my mission to prove them wrong!

First of all, I in no way think that NKY schools cannot potentially compete with the Louisville schools but you are comparing apples to oranges.

1. Open enrollment in 3 county schools does not compare to open enrollment in all of Jefferson County. If any student in a Kenton school other than the three county schools wants to attend a county school they must pay tuition. I think we can agree that the talent pool is very different in all of Jefferson County than in the southern part of Kenton County.

2. Male is a magnet school. You have to apply and be accepted to go there. This allows Male to choose their student population. While I don't think being able to play football alone gets you into Male, I also don't think it hurts your chances. Male has taken football seriously for a very long time.

3. Transportation, I am a little fuzzy on this but the way it was explained to me. You can bus from anywhere in the county to all schools. You may have to transfer busses but you can get it done. In Kenton County there is no bus service for any open enrolled students. So if a kid wants to go to SK from say Ft. Mitchell or Covington not only do they have to pay tuition they must also find a way to and from school.

Again I in no way think that NKY 6A schools should not be able to compete with Louisville schools, but there are distinct advantages that must be overcome to do so.

I hear what you're saying, but its still all semantics. Magnet schools such as Male and others in Louisville can choose. But my guess is they choose based on academics and behavior history first and Football would have very little to do with who they let in. Remember, these are educators making the decisions. They are not graded on how good their football team is...or any sport for that matter. I'm not saying it doesn't assist a little, but not as much as most think and not enough to where if Ryle or someone else got the same number of out of district kids Male is getting, that it closes the gap between them. There are other magnet schools in Louisville as well. Why is Male different?

Now if a kid chooses to go to Male and can get accepted, then the "no tuition" would be a slight advantage. However, you still have to make some sacrifices being on the other side of town. Some would be able to do that and some wouldn't. And that elite athlete is still competing to get into Male with kids from all other walks of life. They don't say, well we have a big class of football players coming in, lets take them to the front of the line and we'll see how many spots we have left for the brainacs and the band members.

But to your point, in Kenton County...if a kid attends Dixie or Scott, they could go to SK for free correct? So we are only talking how many schools couldn't SK pull from in the entire county? Beechwood and Holmes? (guessing).

And yes, the talent pool if good in Louisville. However, the competition for the good players is much steeper as well. Several schools competing for the talent that is available.

Getting to school there may have bus options. But still not ideal. And my guess is that most kids that come from across the city figure out ways to get there without a bus. It's the same thing with kids going to any school that isn't in their neighborhood. Or any kid that lives in Edgewood and wants to go to SK. They would find a way and get to go for free.

If people want to get to that school, they find a way to make it happen. At the end of the day whether you're a mangnet school, public/independent and you have open enrollment, you're on a pretty even playing field. And most of what we are talking about is controlled by your district. Everyone has challenges. It's who overcomes them to create good programs. It's not just practicing a lot and working real hard. It a lot of things that are way outside the lines too. It's not easy. It's not supposed to be easy. If it was easy, we'd all be championship programs.

If you don't think football matters to the educational leaders of Male HS I would call you extremely naive.

Last I checked Jefferson County has a significantly larger population than Kenton.

I don't know about you but $3K a year is not a little advantage. (Tuition)

Not sure there are more good football teams in Louisville than in NKY,and per capita I would say all in all NKY equates itself very well.

Other than the private schools Male is easily the big dog with Manuel a distant second. I am not sure there is truly that much competition for the elite talent in Jefferson County that can't afford a private school education.

Once again they are all obstacles to overcome not insurmountable but obstacles none the less.

1 team in the past 20 years.

So what's your point?

I feel like this is the conversation that happens all over NKY:

Coach:Okay boys, I know it's August and it's hot. Let's sit down and put out goals together. Who's got one?

Player: I do coach.

Coach: Go ahead.

Player: Let's win district!

Coach: Great one son! Who Else?

Player: Let's win the region!

Coach: Another good one Who else?

Player: Let make a run at second in the State!

Coach: Second? Why second?

Player: Well we obviously can't win state. Or at least that's what I've been led to believe by everyone around my life since I was in Pee Wee ball. So I thought second was what we were shooting for!

Again, I've never lined up across from anyone and didn't think I didn't have a chance to win in any sport. And if I got my butt kicked, I went out and figured out how to not let it happen again. It can be done. It takes time and it take buy in, but it can be done. There is no reason why Lexington schools and NKY schools should not be able to compete. Period.

My point is that it's a hard path to state title for most teams outside of Jefferson county. I don't see why some folks from that area continue to take shots at NKY schools like they're a failure and not being successful because of their lack of championships. If we followed that logic then only one county in the state is successful at football in the biggest class.
