What Are YOU Doing To Make This Country Better?

Featured Replies

My guy @00Rocket28 posed that question to me in the CK thread. He says he makes the state safer by enforcing our laws and arresting bad guys. Kudos to him. As I've mentioned previously, my dad is a retired officer so I certainly appreciate the life.

But to his question. What are you doing ? Most of us try to contribute by raising children to be good citizens. Many of us donate to charities. Many of us pray for the struggling/hurting people of the world.

However, I don't think that's what Rocket was asking me since that's what most people already do.

It's a great question and one we all need to ask ourselves. Are we using our time and talents , in addition to our treasure, to make this country better.

However, before I answer I'll ask Rocket to start out since it was his question.

Besides doing your job very well what are you doing to help society get better? We always like the person who has the idea to start out. Great question.

Besides my job, as I'm about 1/3 of the way to retirement I've changed my focus to much more community oriented things, some is on shift, a lot is volunteered. Very involved in the Christmas Cops, which is voluntary, and that's not just the day of the event, I do home visits to find deserving families. I'm also involved in community leadership with Murray State within the community which focuses on leadership within the career as well as building relationships in the community. These are just a few things and I'm seriously questioning your motives for attempting to throw it back on me, but I know I'm giving an effort in my community.

I'm not like those sitting around on the computer complaining about the world and doing nothing to help. Too many on here throw barbs at posters for disagreeing with them. Until you're doing something to help, the complaining and arm chair QBs S should just shut up if they aren't willing to get out there and volunteer their time to help.

The biggest problem in the US is dads not doing their job. For the most part, none of us can afford to donate life changing money, but the one thing that's free that you can donate is time. There's Boys and Girls clubs that are in dire need of mentors to be father figures. If anyone on here volunteers to help those who need help, I commend you.

Have volunteered with Boy Scouts for 15 years and a few other non profits for over twenty years.

Beautiful and we agree.

I'm a Big Brother to a 4th grader whose dad has been in and out of prison and doesn't live with the boy. His mom died 4 years ago. Older brother in and out of trouble. Lives with grandma who tries as hard as she can but.... Great kid. Just needs some love, attention, and guidance.

I engage young kids and young adults in discussion about the world and how they can help.

I fund a scholarship at my alma mater.

I help kids land jobs.

I write coaches about kids who I think can play college ball.

I give b-ball skills lessons at no charge b/c I love to see kids get better if they want to.

Like all of us, I could do more.

I've served my country here and abroad in the military. I've been a K-9 Law enforcement officer that has also represented this country over seas in competition and came away with several wins representing our country. I have volunteered many times for the Special Olympics when I lived in SC. I also during my military days helped sponsor and work with a couple orphanages in South Korea while representing our country. I have volunteered to work with first responders in their communications department during the Salt Lake Olympics. I currently work for local gov't in the public safety field.

I am very proud of the time I have dedicated in my lifetime either serving for our country or representing our country in numerous areas. All I strongly believe have represented our country in a very positive way.

Most agencies have ride along programs. Maybe some should sign up for a ride along at an agency with a diverse population and go into it with an open mind.

I don't do as much as I'd like given my work schedule. I do my best to engage in community outreach as best as possible through work.

I served my country in the U.S. Navy, I was a FF/Paramedic for 25 years. I have volunteered as a little league football coach and later as a volunteer middle school and high school football coach. I have adopted two daughters from Ethiopia. I now serve as a Court Security Officer for our local Sheriff.

I guess in the parameters of this thread, I am doing nothing.

How do you really measure this? Is quantity what you are looking for? Bottom line for me is I do things I will never share because that is not why I do them and everything I do is anonymous monetarily. Obviously mentoring is not that way. I can say I do my best to help, but I could always do more.

Two important guides to my life is never be "learned" and never deny help to those that I believe truly need it. I have been more blessed that I deserve. That is the very east I can do.

I did a ride along with the LAPD about 4 years after the LA riots. We patrolled right where the riots were, Florence and Normandie. It was absolutely crazy for a normal Saturday night.

I would LOVE to do a ride along. I've always wanted to do one to get a first hand perspective of what you guys do.

It's really easy to do, just call the departments non-emergency line during businesses hours. I bet a ride along in Louisvilles rougher areas on a night shift would be entertaining.

I, along with my wife, produced and nurtured two exceptional humans who definitely make this country a better place.
