Ready for Launch: Olympic Channel Set for Takeoff After Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO — On Sunday night, right after the flame has been extinguished in Rio de Janeiro, another Olympic project will burst out of the starting blocks.

It's the launch of the Olympic Channel, a $450 million venture designed to keep Olympic sports and athletes relevant in the years between each games and attract new, younger audiences to a sports movement that has recently been battered by corruption and doping scandals.

The digital channel, which will operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, will go live after the closing ceremony of the Rio Games, providing a mix of live sports events, documentaries, archive footage, news and highlights. It's an undertaking that is still in evolution and whose success, or failure, will depend on whether today's generation finds it relevant or tunes out.

What makes me watch the olympics is that it isn't on for 4 more years. I think it takes away its mystique if it is on all the time.

The official site for the channel is supposed to be olympicchannel.com but it not up yet. Hopefully the site will tell what channel it is.

I think it's a good idea, although I don't know how much I'll tune in.

I really don't think I will tune in much at all. I recorded the majority of the Olympics and watched as much as I could. I will be ready to watch again in 2020

I watched the majority of the swimming events, and some gymnastics. I also watched a night or two of the track events (love watching Usain Bolt), but that's about it for me.

I do think it'd be cool to feature past Olympic athletes, though.

I'm good to watch all of these sports...every 4 years. Other than that, I'm good with basketball, football and soccer.

I like it. I'm sincerely interested in who won the 1600m in the 1932 olympics. I like history, and past Olympic history seems very intriguing

I want to see the fringe sports, if they do this. Give me the Luge world cup, ping pong, curling, pentathlon, bobsled and others like that....that's what I'd watch if they put it on.

This may be a hit internationally, but I don't see it getting much attention in the States.

I like the idea. I'll certainly tune in every now and then. It won't be must watch TV, but it will find a spot in my TV watching rotation.

I'm all for it; maybe gives us a little more diversity in coverage. I always root for American athletes but I don't want to ONLY see American athletes on TV. It's a flaw in NBC's coverage, I feel.

When I used to have Showtime, there were periods when those Bud Greenspan documentaries from each Olympics were in heavy rotation and I watched them all the time. Great stories of different athletes from around the world. Really good stuff, all of them.

I can't figure out if it's just on the internet or if it's actually on tv? If it is on tv I can't seem to find the channel.
